I don’t mean they “happen to be” in the sense that they are good for no logical reason, I simply mean they happen to be good at all of these extra sports they sponsor that nobody else really has. Stanford does really well in the Directors Cup because they sponsor more sports than everyone else and they dominate in the sports that aren’t as mainstream.

For comparison sake, Stanford sponsors the second most varsity programs at the major D1 level with 36 (OSU has 37). Michigan sponsors 29. That’s an additional 7 sports Stanford has where they can (and do) post scores to extend that gap with Michigan.

They sponsor sports like sailing, fencing, squash, rowing and lightweight rowing. Allowing them to rack up points in programs with very few participating opponents. Making the competition almost unfair at this point.

Not saying it’s a bad thing. Ultimately the Directors Cup doesn’t mean a whole lot, but it is skewed in favor of programs like Stanford that sponsor more sports that have fewer participating schools, allowing higher point totals.

Please forgive a guy a moment of Ivy-ness, but I was like, where the fuck are Harvard/Yale/Princeton and then I remembered we don’t have sports this year ?

Did have a momentary panic attack that some epic passing of the torch had occurred.
