Michigan's influence on college football. B1G & nationally

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Finally finished a piece for my book of information that covers every Michigan player who went on to be a head coach. College and pro, that is. I was contemplating doing HS but quickly realized that would be impossible due to the very little information there is out there about HS football.

B1G schools with Michigan ties-

School # of U-M Alums as HC
Illinois 1 (Pete Elliott)
Iowa 3 (Roger Sherman, Forest Evashevski, Jerry Burns)
Michigan State 1 (Harry Kipke)
Nebraska

4 (Charles Thomas, William Cole,

Henry Schulte, Pete Elliott)

Ohio 1 (Albert Herrnstein)
Purdue 1 (Albert Herrnstein)
Wisconsin 1 (Ivy Williamson)

Other programs of note with Michigan ties-

School # of U-M Alums as HC
Auburn 1
Notre Dame 3
Arkansas 3
Texas 2
Tennessee 1
Vanderbilt 1
Oregon 2
Oregon State 2
Delaware 2*

*Delaware is listed because of the long history of a Michigan-Delaware connection. When David Nelson (HB, 1939-1941) arrvied in Newark in 1951, he brought Fritz Crisler's winged helmet design and the Blue Hens have worn them since. Similar color scheme to Michigan's too.

Fast forward to the end of Nelson's tenure. Another Michigan Man took over the Fightin' Blue Hens. Harold "Tubby" Raymond (G/E, 1946 & 1948). Raymond is the greatest coach in Delaware history going 300-119-3 from 1966-2001 with the Hens including three NCAA Division I-AA National Championships. Delaware's stadium is named Tubby Raymond Field or "The Tub" for short.

So, Notre Dame had 3 Michigan men as head coaches? That is another good piece of ammunition for my Domer debates. Has Michigan ever hired an ND alumnus as HC?
