META: Introducing Topics

Submitted by Seth on February 28th, 2023 at 3:35 PM

With the recent MGoBlog update we're introducing a new over-taxonomy for the site called Topics. When starting a thread you will have to choose at least one of them.

They are (for now):

  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Hockey
  • Baseball/Softball
  • Recruiting
  • Other

...and one of our devs is a former lacrosse player and thinks I haven't noticed that one keeps getting re-added.

You can choose more than one, for example basketball and recruiting if you're doing a Future Hoops Originals piece on Papa Kante.

The old user tags taxonomy will still be in effect, so feel free to continue using those--nothing about them or how they're used will change. I wanted a higher, site-wide taxonomy now to give us the option in the future for users to be able to curate the content they get. Right now it's just building up the database.

Moderation note: If you choose topics that aren't relevant to your thread, you'll lose the ability to post threads. If you're the kind of person who pushes every button to put the elevator out of service for awhile you probably shouldn't be creating threads here anyways.

I think shitposts could be further divided into three sub-categories:

1. I'm enraged at what happened on the field/court/ice/AD's office/office of the university president who never likes sports anyway. (Think we got that last one fixed, but I just added it to be comprehensive.)

2. I'm drunk and it's late, but I'm gonna post anyway because I'll be damned if I'll take any advice from Dave Brandon.

3. I'm an idiot who unfortunately has enough points to start a post.

Again, the standard taxonomy works for that. These are larger topics so people can streamline the content they see, for example if someone comes here during football season and just wants the football content, not our hoops previews and hockey coverage and world cup and ann arbor's election. Everything they would see through that portal would be football topics.
