mcguff mention on RR radio show

Submitted by gpsimms not to… on
On the RR show, Doug Karsh specifically asked about the Same McGuffie rumors and Coach Gibson said, "I don't know where these rumors come from, but he's back from Texas and will be on the bus to Columbus" I guess this doesn't really shed any "new" light on the situation, just thought it was interesting they addressed the "rumor." I hear McGuffie came in late last night at the willow run airport, anybody go out and see it?

Fuckin A. My 7 year ol son was CRUSHED at the possibility of Sam leaving. Sam, if by some reason you read this, please think of Teddy. He's a good boy and he worships you. He wants a #2 jersey with the name Teddy McGuffie on the back from Santa. Most of all he wants to see you get 212 all-purpose yards and 4 td's against Ohio State. Please stay. Do it for Teddy.

Well, it seems like your son is in luck. I was told he changed his mind last night, but I need to double check everything. It seems like it's true, since he practiced and is going to the OSU game. This whole thing has been a mess. Thank you to everyone who read our post, and saw that a request for transfer did not mean official transfer. It seems some people on other boards have taken it to mean the opposite, and are saying we don't know what we're talking about. People forget that something very similar happened with Braylon Edwards too. I ensure you guys that what we reported did happen, but he has now (it seems) changed his mind. This could get turned around again, but who knows. I'm kind of annoyed by it now, to be honest. So, I'll find out more and try to get to the bottom of it. It seems like he hasn't really told anyone the real reason in the beginning.

I realize I'm going to take SOME crap for this, but here goes: Isn't this whole story a compelling reason to not make a cottage industry off of reporting the rumored whims of an 18-year-old? I'm not saying McGuffie didn't waiver, or that he did - I clearly know nothing. But is it possible that in a rush to put information out, your sources over-stated the direness of the situation? Or under-stated the fact that McGuffie had tons of stuff going on, any maybe hadn't thought that hard about this? When I was in college, I played some sports, and was so tired, homesick, and broken down half-way through my freshman year that I called my mom and said I wanted to come home - to leave Michigan. I'm glad that I didn't have people hanging around to spread that rumor, or a press waiting to publish it, because it was a fleeting reaction. I'm not trying to criticize you harshly, Tom - I love your interviews, your knowledge of recruiting, and the access you seem to have, and this doesn't diminish any of that. But when I think of a depressed, injured kid who is dealing with the loss of a loved one having to deal with thousands of people speculating on their future because someone closed to him opened his mouth - it sort of makes my stomach turn.

agree completely with chitown. and frankly if you're gonna report this stuff, maybe running a headline "mcguffie others leaving team" wasn't the bets idea if what you meant was "mcguffie considering leaving team, no decision made"

Ok, I respect your opinion, and I won't report as much on here anymore until it's final. However, my sources are not "hearing it from the players, then relaying the message to me." They're hearing it straight from the horses mouth, sources aren't necessarily outsiders. We posted this thinking that there were a lot of rumors out there, and no one knew what was going on, so we thought you'd like to be informed. If you go back and read the posts that I repeatedly put up, they say, in no way does this mean he's transferring. I simply told you all that he had talked to Coach Jackson, which I 100% know that conversation took place. Telling a coach of his intent, and filing transfer papers are completely different. So you're right, people take things differently, and I won't post any insider news anymore until the coaches say it's official. As far as the post at the bottom about "fucking the pooch." I disagree, and again if you go back and look at the posts, they say over and over that he could change his mind. We reported a fact, an event that took place. So if all you want to know is the final outcome then that's what I'll wait for.

I disagree with the others. I want to hear substantiated news when it breaks, and you did just that. I am confident that you weren't posting a rumor - you did your homework and heard this from people that matter. I want that news. Now things appear to be going the other way, and we have that news early thanks to you. Keep doing what you're doing. Just because the kid changed his mond doesn't mean that you didn't do a great job reporting. Now, whether Brian should blare this news across the front page in the manner he did is another story entirely. He could have made it a bit clearer that things weren't finalized for the sake of uninformed visitors. I think us regulars were sufficiently aware of the possibility of a change of heart based on your reports. Again, please keep up your good work and don't let some detractors keep you from doing your thing.

Tom VH and MgoBlog fucked the pooch on this one. I totally agree with chitown's sentiments. In the future you and this blog need to show more restraint. You have some insider knowledge. That's honestly very cool and I envy you for that. But it's time to play it closer to the vest and not be so gossipy. AND THIS ADVICE STANDS no matter what Sam's ultimate decision is.

My "pooch" comment was more directed at MGoBlog for putting up a post entitled, and I quote, "Sam McGuffie, Others Leaving Team." That was too knee-jerk. And I think you missed the point of chitown's criticism. The reason you should hold back on CERTAIN inside info like this is because we assume you're experienced enough to know that 18-20 yr old kids have a tendency to change their minds. These reports going public only made a difficult moment for this kid even worse. Now, if you get inside info that Threet broke his foot into 3 places at Tuesday's practice, then by all means SHARE. It's this other sensitive "the kid's all torn up with emotions" type of shit that you should be more prudent about spilling. I know it's sometimes a blurry line, so I apologize if I came off too harsh. Same team and all that. Keep up the great work.

thanks, I am not mad at anyone, and I understand the point he was trying to make. If I told you guys who told me this information in the first place your jaw would literally drop. From now on we will be way more selective.

Yeah, Tom, I wasn't trying to bash you - I tried to word what I wrote as diplomatically as possible. I DO appreciate the work you do - I don't want to give you the perception I don't. I guess I just feel bad that this kid was dealing with: a) being injured b) being homesick c) having a death in the family d) (possibly) being depressed as a result of a, b, and c. THEN had people close to him, in essence, dime him out to the media so all us chuckleheads on the intrawebs can speculate on his mental health, and the more vindictive of us can start saying shitty things like "good riddance" or "he's a quitter". I hope you see where I'm coming from?
