PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's basketball freshman forward Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster Academy [Mass.]) was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week today (Monday, Dec. 24) by the conference office. It is the first conference weekly award of his career.
Coming off the bench in U-M's 93-54 victory over Eastern Michigan last Thursday (Dec. 20), McGary recorded his first career double-double as he tied his career best with 10 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. He was 5-for-8 from the field and posted his second 10-point game of the season. With five offensive rebounds and six defensive, he posted his second career double-digit rebounding performance, topping the 10 he had against Binghamton. He also recorded career bests for assists (2) and steals (3) against the Eagles.
Overall, it is the fifth conference accolade for U-M this season. Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) and Tim Hardaway Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior HS) have each earned player of the week honors, while Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/St. Mark's School) has two freshman of the week awards.
The Wolverines will return to Crisler Center on Saturday (Dec. 29), when they host Central Michigan in their last game before opening Big Ten play. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
