MBB Makes Top 5 For Potential Guard Grad Transfer
DePaul guard transfer, Jalen Coleman-Lands announced his Top 5 last night and he's down to Cal, USC, NC State, Iowa State, and Michigan.
Coleman-Lands is a former top 35 recruit and would be immediately eligible. If his name rings a bell, he spent his first two seasons at Illinois before transferring to DePaul. He averaged 11 ppg last season for DePaul. Being that I went to DePaul for grad school and watch a decent amount of Blue Demon basketball here in Chicago, I think he's worth a shot and we need another guard on the team for next year.
Would love to have Jalen on the team! We shall see.
wasn't coleman [lands] recruited by coach beilein once upon a time as a class of 2015 freshman?
Yes, and it looked like Michigan was doing well in that recruitment at one point IIRC.
Michigan was widely expected to get him. Instead, Beilein chose a completely unknown division 3 transfer over him. Pretty damn funny how things work out. A current basketball writer on here had a rather infamous meltdown on the umhoops forum over that. Ahh, fun times.
He’s from Indiana so that’s gotta help Michigan if proximity to home is a factor.
Might as well fill the slot. Bajema’s ~2mins/game got to go somewhere, right?
I'm not so sure that I agree. If Zeb is like most freshmen and isn't ready to go, I could see Jalen getting 5-10 mins, in particular early on. I think a lot of it also comes down to what Nunez looks like come the fall.
He wanted more of an on-ball role with DePaul, the coaching staff wanted to decrease the existing on-ball usage...........hence the disconnect and subsequent transfer.
If you want a fun trip down basketball memory lane search Jalen Coleman in the mgoblog search bar.
We do have room.
Since I’m numb to be listed in top 5’s now this made me think. This guy has played in the Big Ten and Big East. If he transfers to a Big 12 or PAC 10 school has there ever been another player to participate in 3 major conferences?
Should we be concerned that he only shot over 40% from the field one season at DePaul?
Nah. He’d only shoot 10-20 shots all season here.
I’ll take him - reminds me a bit of Scotty Thurman for those of you from the 90s.
We recruited him heavily out of high school and I think we were in his final couple of choices. He's extremely talented and I was very disappointed when we didn't get him initially. It's not clear why it didn't happen - whether we lost interest due to signing DRob or he was indecisive. Would love him on board.
