Maybe it's time for JUCO players?

Submitted by Steve in PA on
We need players on D that can play right now. I know that bigtime programs shy away from them, but I've seen plenty of programs build with JUCOs while they develop their younger players. Isn't the QB for Oregon a JUCO transfer? Maybe this is the bandaid that patches us next year until we can bring in some legit 3and 4 star players?

Yes, Masoli is a JUCO. So far we've offered two guys that I know of: Wayne Dorsey (a defensive lineman) and Mike Harris (a cornerback). I don't think we have a great shot at either, but we'll see...

I remember hearing somewhere that one of the big reasons we don't get JUCO guys as much is because UM doesn't allow a lot of their credits from JC to transfer over. Anyone have any further info on this?

which determines the value of a degree from U of M, makes it very hard for JUCO credits to transfer in at face value. It would not be fair to admit someone for two remaining years of football eligibility who is three years away from graduation based on credits, so the Admissions Dept doesn't do it.

Pretty much everyone takes some classes outside of Michigan (I took E&M Physics at Eastern) it's that you can only transfer so many credits into Michigan and also a lot of credits don't transfer in besides "departmental credits" which gives you credits but doesn't get rid of pre-reqs. So you wouldn't be able to graduate on time.

it's very difficult to get their credits to transfer to umich. otherwise, there's no question we would have seen several jucos over the last two yrs.

1. Very hard for jucos to transfer to uofm 2. Jucos are a band-aid and are also not guarantees to be great either (see austin panter). Jucos are a desperation move and are a band-aid over a huge wound. It'll stop the bleeding until the band-aid gets ripped off after a few days

Walk-ons are a band-aid too, and I don't think great is what we're looking for. I also think that "desparation" and "huge wound" are terms that apply very well to our defense right now. It really comes down to the transfer requirements. A minor undesirable side effect would be the Freep bitching about how Rodriguez is changing the culture by taking in academically unsound recruits, but that would be one of the most minor hypothetical problems we would have.

They aren't a quick fix. We are playing 2 underclassmen walk-ons. These aren't seasoned veteran Juco players these are young walk-ons who will play for us for the same amount of time that schollie kids will. Playing a walk-on is most certainly not a band-aid.

I knew the JUCO thing was academic and admissions related but what about FCS guys? I know its a desperation move and those guys aren't 1A for a reason but I'd imagine that they'd help shore things up quickly. Could probably get them to enroll early, too. Just a thought.
