Marvin Robinson wide open

Submitted by Jerard on
ESPN: ......Despite the long list of suitors, Robinson did mention a few schools that stick out, "I like Michigan, Ohio State, South Florida and North Carolina. I like those four the most. They are all equal right now. But I'm still wide open to any college. I won't decide until after my senior season."

It's a quote from Robinson himself. I think Scout had a similar quote from him, too. It might have been the same one that ESPN used. I agree though, that its nothing to worry about. Signing Day '10 is much too far away to care at this point.

Yeah like 2 years ago when Kirk Herbstriet said that his sources said that Les Miles was going to take the job UM and then later had to go back and retract the statement. I guess that's what you get when you hire a Suckey for a job.

It was a year ago, and Kirk is probably the best college football guy ESPN has. You must have missed it when at the end of the season he was defending Rich Rodriguez and calling out the "Michigan has too much talent to be 3-9" meme. He pointed out no one could win with his quarterbacks and that RichRod would get the team ready to compete going forward. I feel bad for whomever hired YOU for a job though.

Now we know he isn't one of those committ, decommitt, recommitt, decommitt, committ to another school then switch to another on nation signing day.

So we should only concern ourselves with 5 star recruits? He's a highly touted prospect regardless, and he has shown some serious Michigan interest. *Note: I am not "concerned" at this point -- just pointing out why Michigan fans frequently talk about him.

Well, just to obliterate your point, he's not a five star guy because neither Scout nor Rivals have doled out their official rankings yet. Rivals has nothing at all, and Scout has only the ten most obvious impact guys rated at five. By all accounts, Marvin Robinson is widely expected to be one of the top two safety commits in the country next year, and yes, a five-star to all of the major recruiting services.

During the off-season (now) about 75% of this blog is devoted to recruiting (including the most recent main page post. In fact, the title of this post includes the name of a 2010 recruit. You decided to read it, doesn't that mean you're at least somewhat concerned? I don't see it as a waste to concern yourself in that which you are interested. What I do think is a waste is telling someone else what they should be concerned about.

I'd much rather be wrapped up in recruiting than be so utterly ignorant on the matter than I say things like, "Who cares about a recruit if he's not a five-star guy, anyway?" You obviously care about recruiting enough to make such a statement (not to mention that you somehow accidentally wandered into a thread obviously about a recruit), but know little to nothing about it to place such importance on star ranking. Don't even try to play the "I don't really care" card.

But it is good to see early "commits" and hear top players mention Michigan. It can only help recruiting to have the Michigan "brand" in the mix for so many top prospects, even if many of the players don't end up here.

Concerned? No. Interested? Yes. Big difference. I am not going to lose sleep at night if any of these kids commit or not. Don't get me wrong, recruiting is very interesting, but to get mad / stress out / whatever over some KID (emphasis on kid - remember when you were in high school?) wants to do approximately one year from now is insane. If you take an even further step back, which recruits have we won that made a meaningful difference that were highly ranked? I can only think of four over the past five or six years: Braylon, Henne, Woodley, and Long. So those were guys we should have been worried about if we lost them. Who is on the list that we lost out to that would have made a big difference? Pryor? Anyone else? Come on people..

Here are the three definitions Webster gives for the verb "concern." 1. to relate to; be connected with; be of interest or importance to; affect: The water shortage concerns us all. 2. to interest or engage (used reflexively or in the passive, often fol. by with or in): She concerns herself with every aspect of the business. 3. to trouble, worry, or disquiet: I am concerned about his health. You seem to only use the third definition there. You can "concern" yourself with recruiting with out losing sleep. I don't think any of us do that. I don't want to argue semantics with you (maybe I already am) but to say that fans of a football team shouldn't concern themselves with the future of said team is silly. In response to your question: Braylon was not highly rated, either was Long, though he was higher than BE. Brandon Graham comes to mind as a highly rated contributor, how about Mouton or Warren? As far as highly rated guys we've missed out on? That's a long list.

Thought about Graham immediately after I posted that. And I am definitely high on Mouton and Warren (more so than the average person on this board), but are we ready to crown them until they play a meaningful role on a winning team? I think they will be great, but let's not lump them into the Graham/Woodley/Hall/Marlin bucket JUST quite yet... And I know a lot of people pass on us each year, but how many times has the guy been a top 20 guy that has made a decision late (e.g., signing day or later) that has had a terrible effect on our team over the last 5 years? Pryor and that's it in my book. Tebow is a possibility, but did he string us along for awhile? I know he visited, but were we ever really in serious contention for him? I never thought so...

I never said anything about levels of interest - I'm talking about a solid chance to commit, like we're 1 of 3 or 1 of 4 and he has at one point in time mentioned us as his leader. Sorry if I did not make this clear earlier (although I know I didn't say anything explicit about levels of interest). Anything less than top 3 or 4 with a quote on how much the recruit likes M, and I think the hit rate with said recruits is less than 10%. And I bet Tebow fits into this category. (I could be wrong - i didn't follow Tebow in H.S., I am just playing the odds here)
