Marion Barber found dead
Former Cowboys and Bears RB Marion Barber was found dead in Frisco, Tex. on Wednesday.
He was found deceased in his apartment by Frisco police. The cause of Barber's death is currently unknown. The former No. 109 overall pick of the 2005 draft by the Cowboys out of Minnesota, Barber spent his first six seasons with Dallas and made the Pro Bowl in 2007. He spent his final season with the Bears in 2011 and then retired. Barber was set to turn 39 years old in nine days. He'd battled some mental-health issues post-retirement. Our thoughts are with Barber's family and loved ones.
Man, he and Maroney torched us that year. Sad to hear.
Felt like there was about a 3-4 year period where Minnesota was RB U in college with Maroney, Barber, and Russell.
They outgained us 424-94 on the ground with Barber having 197.
MICH's 31 4th quarter points pulled it out.
Seems I remember this being a Friday night game and both Lloyd and I thought we shouldn't do that again.
RIP. Too damn young.
It was a Friday night. I think it was because the Twins had a playoff game on Saturday.
The game was also aired live in ESPNClassic. I believe it was the only game ever to have that happen.
That 2003 Michigan @ Minnesota game was on ESPN, not ESPNClassic. It was the 2007 Minnesota @ Michigan game that aired on ESPNClassic.
ESPNClassic has had a few other live games over the years --- an Eastern Illinois @ Penn State game in 2009, for instance, aired there too.
But it is rare, and usually just a result of "that's the only channel we have available."
We're both wrong, the 2004 game was on Classic.
Way too soon. Great back. Peace to his family. RIP
Really sad. RIP to Marion the Barbarian
He was a beast at Minnesota. What a sorrow to wake up to. Condolences to his family and RIP, Marion.
what is going on? I'm reading more and more about world class athletes dying way before their time!!
RIP. Gone way too soon.
By far the highest percentage of these are former football players.
CTE is an epidemic among former football players.
When testing catches up to accurate diagnosis of CTE among living players; we will find that there is a very high incidence of CTE among current college, pro and in smaller percentages HS players.
CTE came to my mind right away.
I played high school football (not very well but I played) and had my lights turned out on two separate occasions. It was the early 70s so I didn't miss a beat and kept playing once the cobwebs cleared. I told my kids to send my brain to the CTE folks after I die.
This dude ran the ball as hard as anyone I've ever seen. Sad how someone with that kind of NFL success ends up with these types of mental health issues after retirement when you're supposed to be living a peaceful life with money in the bank and the NFL pension coming in. RIP
RIP Marion Barber and condolences to his family.
I think that's his father...
Yup, the one from the early 2000s is Marion Barber III. That is Marion Barber Jr.
That's sad - he was a great player.
