M Baseball lead down to 0.5 Games; Plays Neb 2X today to finish season

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on May 17th, 2019 at 7:48 AM

Michigan lost to Nebraska yesterday and Indiana beat Rutgers so their lead is down to 0.5 games.

Due to impending weather, tomorrow's game is moved to today so they will play Nebraska twice today (3pm and 8pm Central) and that will conclude their regular season. Indiana plays Rutgers today and tomorrow to finish their season out.

Let's win the next two and take away any doubt. Go Blue.

It’s starting to look slightly like the 2018 season when Michigan started 4-11 and finished 2-7, but went 27-3 between those two tough stretches.  Going 1-4 in these past five games has set up the possibility that a total collapse could see Michigan finishing fourth in the Big Ten regular-season standings.  Today’s games are must wins in order to guarantee a Big Ten championship for Michigan.

If the worst possible results occur and Michigan gets swept by Nebraska to finish 15-8 in conference, then Nebraska will be 16-8 in conference.  If Illinois sweeps Michigan State, then Illinois will be 16-8 in conference.  If Indiana sweeps Rutgers, then Indiana will finish 17-7 in conference and win the Big Ten conference regular-season championship and Michigan will be fourth in the conference standings.

As of now, Michigan, Indiana, Nebraska and Illinois are the only Big Ten teams projected to be in the NCAA Tournament.  Projected fields for the NCAA tournament still have Michigan as a two-seed.  Baseball America has them in Georgia’s region with Clemson and North Carolina A&T.  LINK  D1 Baseball has Michigan as a two seed in UCLA’s region with UC-Irvine and Nebraska-Omaha. Game 1 of the double header all ready in the 6th inning with Michigan losing as usual. Just have to hope they do better in the Big Ten tournament. Just sad to see the team play so well for most of the conference season and then choke when it really matters.

Down 6-0 in the 8th inning. This is no longer a team problem. It’s a Bakich problem. We can’t close the deal on anything EVER.

Whether it’s the B1G race or needing to win down the stretch to make the NCAA Tournament.

Aside from a great run in 2015 that came out of nowhere, his career has been very underwhelming. Especially with the recruiting considered.

As of yesterday, Michigan’s RPI was 51. LINK  Illinois (19), Indiana (28) and Nebraska (34) all have better RPI’s than Michigan.  EDIT:  Indiana leads Rutgers 5-2 in the bottom of the third. LINK

Having suffered a 7-0, two–hit loss this afternoon, if they lose the second game tonight, it probably means that Michigan will have to win the Big Ten Tournament in order to be selected for the NCAA Tournament.  It's beginning to look like the highlight of the season might become the 7-5 win against currently top-ranked UCLA (second in RPI) in Los Angeles on March 8.

7-0 loss in game 1 of the must sweep DH. 2 hits. Two. Now we’re behind by .5 and need a win and an Indiana loss to RUTGERS.

Baseball and basketball had very similar seasons.  Beat up on shitty teams early in the year.  Do very well early in conference, lay eggs in big games down stretch.  How would you say they aren't similar?  Football was nearly identical other than the fact they lost to ND.  Obviously hockey was rough all year but they had a shot on home ice against OSU to give themselves a chance for a title run and they lost in OT and the year fell apart similar to baseball.

If your idea of a successful end of the year for basketball is beating a #15 and #10 seed then getting embarrassed while being a favorite so be it.

Despite the rain-delayed, second-game, 10-8 win last night at Nebraska, with an RPI of 49, a strength of schedule of 151, only five wins against teams that currently have winning records and a record of 25-2 against teams in the bottom quarter of the RPI rankings, Michigan still might need to win the Big Ten Tournament in order to be selected for the NCAA Tournament, even if they manage to win the Big Ten regular-season championship if Rutgers beats Indiana today.

Of the top 100 teams according to RPI, only 78th-ranked Samford (SOS 185), 82nd-ranked Wright State (SOS 236), 92nd-ranked Morehead State (SOS 212), 95th ranked Bryant (SOS 222), 96th-ranked Central Michigan (SOS 283) and 99th-ranked New Mexico State (SOS 235) have weaker schedules.

The only team in the RPI top 50 with a losing record is 48th-ranked Kentucky (26-28; 7-22 in the SEC), but their strength of schedule is 6 and they beat Michigan 7-4 at home this past Tuesday.  LINK
