Let's get positive

Now that we're all in turmoil here on the MGo, let's point to the future and consider the positive things we saw yesterday (let's just try to not think about the defense, because that's too painful).

Odoms - pure excitement. He's like Breaston with hands. I'm so pumped about his future.

BooBoo - not great in coverage yet, but he has raw talent and big time wheels. He had some great returns too.

Minor - Once again had RAGE. I think he's really finding his way and will be an absolute beast next year.

The offense - finally played 4 quarters, and we could see them coming into their own. Sure Threet had some pretty scary throws, he certainly has no arm what-so-ever but he also made a couple nice throws, including the TD to Savoy (and Savoy caught it!)

see the offense play a fairly mistake free game. Very happy for Savoy getting a TD and outside the Odoms fumble (which hurt) the return game looked albeit against a poor Purdue special teams and defense. Very curious to see T-Rob next year as he is supposed to be a lot like McGuffie in terms of open field ability.

A minor nit: The offense played *3* quarters yesterday. They did zippo in the 3rd qtr - 2 drives, 1 that went 4 plays for 23 yards and 1 3-and-out for 3 yards.

I love Odoms, but calling him "Breaston with hands," I don't quite agree with.  Did Breaston ever muff a punt?  I remember him regularly getting clocked by opposing gunners while somehow managing to hang on.

But anyway, it's really good to see the special teams giving the offense shorter fields to work with.  In many games, our O has had consistently bad field position, which has not done it any favors.

And Minor is clearly coming into his own.  He's not just running with authority, he's also showing improved vision and is hitting the correct hole more than he used to.

As for Threet, I think he's gutting it out on a bad arm.  He had more zip on the ball earlier.

breaston was a great, yeah great, ST player.  Odoms isn't Stevie.  Each game there has been different things to get excited about.  Odoms Td return yesterday.  Minor's overall play, yeah i know the fumble problems yadayadayada, but he's the best player on the field.  McGuffie has played solid.  Threet puts it all on the line, I Love that about the kid.  He's not really a runner, yet he runs the ball hard at linemen and LBS.  This team is bad on both lines, except B Graham, and thats probably the biggest problem next to not fumbling.  I am remaining positive with this team and the overall direction of the program.  Keep your heads up, keep sporting your UM gear, and stay optimistic.

Steve Breaston had excellent hands for fielding punts.  He had subpar hands for catching passes.

Odoms has pretty good hands when catching passes.  The jury is still out on his punt catching abilities, since he's only had a couple returns.  Obviously, yesterday's fumble didn't help his status in that department.

in hockey.

There seems to be a small group of our players that are buying into everything and are starting to make plays.

Atleast there were plays being made in the Purdue game. If we can atleast keep that up for the remaining games I will be happy, win or lose.

I don't understand this team's trouble with fielding kicks!  Catching a wobbling punt or kickoff is tougher with pads and a facemask, but it's not the end of the world.  Why is this proving so difficult?

Minor - Obviously great.  I don't know if it was Barwis or the chance to be the starter or what, but he's been great so far.  He was injured earlier, so that excuses the fumbles.

Odoms - Good; would be great if blunders did not happen.  He's a key part of our offense, and can really cut loose when he isn't zerged.  Special teams results are really like early season Minor; fumble or TD.  I expect he'll be great in the future.

Stonum - Wow, he did quite well at the game.  I can definitely see the upside now.

Savoy - Welcome, and sorry I didn't recognize you.  You did better than Clemons, and I like that.

Although I'd disagree with some about Threet; he was chucking the ball around rather erratically and still nearly got one or two intercepted.  I really hope he's injured (in a healable way), because he's been underwhelming as of late.  There were also several times when he handed off instead of keeping it and snagging first down+ yardage.  And don't get me wrong, I have a ton of respect for Threet and he's >>>>> Sheridan, but calling him a positive for the day is wrong.
