Late Hit Calls

Submitted by Onas on

Was anyone else as mad as I was when there was no late hit penalty on the play in the first quarter when Odoms dropped the pass, it was whistled dead like 4-5 times, then a Minnesota player hit run, rolling on his ankle a bit and hurting him (if only temporarily)?

It seems like I've seen so many weak, weak, weak late hits this year and yet here, when a player hits the guys after several whistles and HURTS him, no call.  Everyone always complains about the refs, but this year, in the booth and on the field, they've been noticably terrible.

If the play were over, Odoms shouldn't have dove at the ball.  Great no call, late hit calls are ridiculous, I watched two of them in the tuos-NW game where the guy gets hit as his foot lands out of bounds.  If the guy is out of bounds, then gets hit, fine, but the overprotection is absurd.  This isn't tennis....

It was a good no call.  The hit was late, but the problem was the fact that the ref did not blow the whistle until a few seconds after the play was over, at which time the player was already diving at Odoms.  All in all, kind of a cheap shot, but no call was in order.

The hit did come a little bit late.  The Minnesota guy should have heard the whistle and stopped.  At the same time, I think Odoms was going to pick up the ball to give it to the ref and confused people by making it look like he was trying to pick up the fumble.  I thought it was a good non-call, but the ref should have (and maybe he did) given the Minnesota guys a warning about stopping at the whistle.

If the whistle blows, and a player hits a kid's knee seconds after the whistle, it is a late hit. By definition.

for one holding. Varies game-to-game, ref to ref.

But the way I saw it, it looked like Odoms (and the defender) were going after the ball as if it were live. When the ball is on the turf, the whistle blows, guys are still going at it (an unfortunate result of who ever ends up with it under the pile, way after the whistle, is the one who gets the ball).

The defender was out of control, and ended up hitting Odoms in very vulnerable place. I still think it was due to the uncertainty whether it was a forward pass or a lateral. Guys flying around out of control after (a presumed) live ball, whistle blows, inadvertent hits (and I do think it was inadvertent), no call. Sucks though that a guy's career could end due to just an occurance.

Thats the way I saw it, anyway.

By definition, if you grab hold of somebody's jersey, it's holding and a 10-yard penalty.  By definition, if you touch a receiver when the ball is in the air, it's pass interference and a 15-yard penalty.  Those aren't always called and SHOULDN'T always be called.

The refs called a pretty loose game today, not just with regard to late hits.  I thought they let a few holds and interferences (on both teams) go.
