Kenzie Nemitz 2 out walkoff winner gives Softball the SWEEP of Indiana

This was circled before the season as the biggest home series of 2019.

Michigan went 2-1 against Indiana last year in a series that included the teams splitting extra inning games in Bloomington.

Indiana is a good team. They upset Georgia earlier in the season and were in the top-20 at one point before coming back down to earth.

#23 Michigan took down Indiana twice in close games on Friday (4-1 Michigan) and yesterday (3-2 Michigan). Indiana nearly tied the game in the 7th inning yesterday as they made it a one run game with a 2 out homer, but Meghan Beaubien slammed the door and gave Michigan the series-clinching win.

But the expectation for Michigan Softball is to sweep every series.

The Wolverines looked great early on with an RBI double by Alex Sobczak and an RBI triple by Mackenzie Nemitz to go up 2-0 in the 1st inning on the Hoosiers.

However, Indiana tied the game in the 3rd inning with a 2-run homer. Michigan responded in the bottom of the 3rd with a 2-run shot by Alex Sobczak who was outstanding on Alex Sobczak Day at Alumni Field.

Freshman pitcher Alex Storako started having some trouble in the 4th inning which caused Hutch to pull her for sophomore ace Meghan Beaubien. Indiana had hit a few home runs on Beaubien in the previous 2 games which caused some concern in the crowd when the move was made.

The Hoosiers made it a 1 run game with an RBI double and then took the lead with an RBI single and then 2 unearned runs crossed when freshman LF Lexie Blair misplayed the ball which allowed Indiana to take a 6-4 lead.

Michigan's bats suddenly went silent once all of that transpired. It wasn't until the very last frame when the Wolverines responded. And boy did they.

Natalia Rodriguez led off the inning and faced a 3-2 count but lined out to CF for the first out. Just one pitch away from being walked. With one out, Faith Canfield hit a rocket over the wall to dead center to cut Indiana's lead to 6-5.

Natalie Peters then got on with a double to the wall. Lexie Blair was unable to redeem herself, popping out and giving Michigan just one last out to work with. Alex Sobczak stepped to the plate but was intentionally walked by Indiana who was burned by her all weekend.

That brought up walk on-turned-starter Mackenzie Nemitz. If that name sounds familiar to some of you who aren't hardcore Michigan Softball fans, she's the younger sister of elite Wolverine pitcher Nikki Nemitz (2007-2010). She's a senior and hadn't played much until this year but has made the most of it and has had shocking production.

Nemitz smashed the ball to the RF wall for a double which gave Natalie Peters and Alex Sobczak enough time to come home and score.

WALK OFF WINNER. On the final out, Nemitz comes up BIG and gives Michigan the 7-6 comeback victory.

Michigan SWEEPS Indiana in the biggest home series of the season and keeps the Wolverines perfect in B1G play.

Michigan is now 27-10 and 9-0 in the B1G and will now leave Alumni Field for a 7 game road stretch that begins on Friday at 6pm in the hole known as columbus where Michigan will face ohio state.

Great to see Mackenzie step up for a big game. She has been in her sisters shadow her entire career and seldom plays but just keeps working and it paid off today. Good for her

Nice write up WD. We watched the softball win yesterday from the bleachers at Alumni field. Today we saw the heroics from Jack Fisher stadium while watching the baseball team take the series against Minnesota with a big 8-0 win! Great weekend.

Is it weird that Hutch only rosters 3 pitchers typically?  I mean so many other teams seem to be like 6 deep in the circle.  Admittedly, I only notice this when we chase several pitchers from a game so maybe it's just bad teams.  I don't actually know if other good teams roster more pitchers as well. Can anyone who does know provide input?
