Kenny Demens/redshirt question

Submitted by Sommy on
Quick question: I was under the impression that Kenny Demens did not play last year, but I was looking over the roster on MGoBlue.com today, and saw that he had played in one series in the Miami (OH) game. Did the staff just burn his redshirt by doing so? Just wondering. We really need help at LB.

They are all true Juniors who played special teams as true freshman. I looked up their freshman "contributions" today and those three had their redshirts burned for pretty much nothing. Patterson too, however, he got a medical last year so he's a redshirt Jr. this year. Lloyd sure loved letting the true freshman play on the kick-off team!

Redshirts get way to much consideration on this Blog IMHO. Players want to play, IIRC Feagin last year could have used a redshirt, but told RR he wanted to play. The 3 players you mentioned still have 2 years eligibility left and none are so great a talent that I would be loving it if they had 3. Has RR ever given his thoughts on redshirts? There are only 85 scholarships available, so keeping a marginal talent for a 5Th year has pros and cons involved.

I agree, people get way too worked up about the redshirt. If a kid is a true freshman and he can contribute, even if it's on the kick off team, get him in there and rest your good players. Redshirts are meant for OL and other guys who physically aren't ready for college football. If a kid is ready to go out there and hit someone, by all means let him do it. That way, when he's on the 2-deep as a sophomore, he at least knows what it's like to be on the field and play D1 football. Caveat: this is much more for defense than offense. I'm much more in favor of offensive players getting red-shirted.

The question for me is, "Is Mr. True Freshman significantly better than Mr. Fifth Year Walk-on or Mr. Senior Buried on the Depth Chart at running downfield and blowing up the wedge?" If he's significantly better than anyone else trying to do that job, then I say play him. But if the other guy is just as good and you can potentially keep a contributor around for a fifth year, there's really no point.
