Juwan Howard Appreciation

I'll admit it -- I was one of the Beilein haters.

Not that I hated Beilein; of course, that would be stupid. He did a lot of good for the program; he was an elite Xs-and-Os coach, and an honorable man. We had a lot of fun along the way.

But I was definitely one of those annoying posters who got temporarily banned from UMHoops for whining about things like:

- Not recruiting elite talent (and not emphasizing athleticism in recruiting)

- Not casting a wide net in recruiting. After courting a very specific type of 4-star player for what seemed like years, the guy would end up going to Indiana and he'd scramble to find some guy from farm country ranked #867.

- Not coaching D (100% valid except for the last two seasons thanks to Yaklich)

- Generally downplaying big man skills (shot blocking, posting up, O-rebs)

- The slow pace of play, and taking his foot off the gas in the last 10 minutes of games

- The auto bench -- and refusing to play more talented young guys over "senior leaders"

- Some atrocious inbounding

Now I hope that Juwan and Martelli keep the best parts of the Beilein legacy alive -- playing smart, unselfish basketball and avoiding TOs. But having watched these first few games of the Juwan Howard era, man I like what I am seeing. Juwan's team plays a freewheeling, aggressive style of basketball. We still see plenty of back cuts. He likes to run and he likes to post. He throws a wrench into the opponent's works on defense, denying entry passes and trapping. And he's not afraid to recruit the big guns, even though a bunch of people spent a decade telling me those players would never come to Michigan.

And the man always has a smile on his face.

Forgot to add. One thing I already love about Juwan is his willingness to let players play through their mistakes. Beilein would have benched Franz Wagner after one boneheaded play at Atlantis. And yes, Wagner made many such plays. But Juwan lets guys play through their mistakes and this should help them get more confident.

It took a whole season to weaponize Mitch McGary because JB kept benching him whenever he committed a silly foul or a TO.

This comes across as a shitting on John Beilein thread.

Juwan has only coached 7 games. It’s gone great so far. We’re all excited, but hold your horses.

I guess, in some way, this is indeed a pent-up extrusion on Mr Beilein, I suppose.

But I'm just drawing a contrast in their coaching styles. Both good guys, but there is just a fun, freewheeling vibe about Howard.

For the whole Beilein era, there was a lot of heated, soul-searching debate about his "philosophy" and it sometimes sucked the fun out of the game for a lowly fan like me. So I am enjoying watching this new-look team block shots, dunk lobs, and rack up tons of points (no more 58-point games) and just have fun out there.

Looks like it is all Basketball from here on out. I don't blame our football team members headed for the NFL to sit out the Holiday Bowl. Who the fuck wants to get injured playing the Holiday Bowl.

and refusing to play more talented young guys over "senior leaders"

Refresh my memory - who did Trey sit behind as a freshman?  Stauskas?  GR III?   Brazdeikis?  Walton?  Hardaway Jr?

You're sound like Beilein broke up with you and Juwan is the rebound guy.

I understand but don't agree with some of these criticisms of Beilein. His recruiting style, while a bit frustrating, worked for him. As did the methodically paced offense. I also think him playing seniors over more talented players is overblown. He didn't like playing freshman bigs but a lot of coaches take their time with those guys.

However, I'm glad you brought up the inbounding issues. I don't know why that was such a blindspot, but John Beilein's teams had more trouble inbounding against pressure than any I've ever seen. Never in his career did he find an answer for it. This year's team already looks a lot smoother in the area.

Why do you have to trash Beilein to praise Howard? I love coach Howard but he isnt anywhere near Beilein as of right now. I hope he exceeds Beilein and becomes the alltime winningest coach. Time will tell..

“I'll admit it -- I was one of the Beilein haters.”

Proceeds to continue hating Beilein and praising a guy who definitely looks great so far ... in 7 games and 1-2 recruiting wins. This is a (premature) “I told you so” dressed up as a mea culpa.
