John Beilein again has now won at every Big Ten venue

Submitted by Human Torpedo on

Xfinity Center after Maryland joined the Big Ten was the last to fall to us under his watch. Our senior class will finish with wins at every permanent Big Ten venue except three: Mackey Arena (Purdue, last win in 2014), Value City (OSU, last win in 2014), and Welsh-Ryan Arena (Northwestern, 2013). In fact, if Moe Wagner decides to stay for his senior year, all he needs to win at every Big Ten venue is a win at those three as we have won at every other place within the last three years. Should he come back and accomplish that, he'd be the first senior to do it I believe since Ray Jackson and Jimmy King from 1992-95

Given how unbalanced Big Ten schedules are now, that'd be incredible.  You don't get four chances in four years to play in these venues anymore.

Speaking of road games, I hope the committee notes just how many of our Quadrant 1 and 2 games were on the road this season.  The Big Ten scheduling roulette wheel gave us lots of road games against tough teams and home games against easy ones.

Keep this in mind when the sparty starts bragging.  The BIG schedules were so unbalanced this year that, even though MSU has finished on top, it does not mean much.  Against the best teams in the conference, sparty is 0-1 vs UM (at home!), 0-1 vs OSU, they beat Purdue but only played them at home, they beat Nebraska but only played them at home, they beat Penn State but only played them at home.  In fact, their conference road results look this:  W @ 3-14 Rutgers, L @ 15-3 OSU, W @ 3-14 Illinois, W @ 8-10 Maryland, W @ 9-9 Indiana, W @ 3-14 Iowa, W @ 4-13 Minnesota, W @ 6-11 Northwestern (and needed NW to shoot 3 of 23 in the 2nd half to win).

Sparty did not win a single BIG road game against a team with a winning record.  Their conference strength of schedule is 13th out of 14 teams.  I don't see how that performance can be considered that of a "champion".

Bring on the BIG Tournament!

The fact that the seniors have won at 11/14 Big Ten arenas is incredible given that, due to the Big Ten's scheduling, they've only had one or two chances to win in these places. It speaks to the quality of the program that Beilein's built here.

From my quick research, Horford and Morgan won at ten of the eleven arenas pre-Rutgers and Maryland. The only one they couldn't win at was Indiana, which Morgan had five chances and Horford had four.

Beilein runs a clean program (thank goodness), develops players, wins regularly and exemplifies class. He has weathered some rough patches and never blamed players or circumstances. The NCAA turmoil will still work to the advantage of Beilein and UM in the long term. Izzo is tainted with shady actions with players in legal troubles and Stephens’ dirty recruiting. The 2019 class is excellent and the returnees will be strong. First, though, let’s see how well this season ends with a great group of guys.
