Jamal Crawford Still Wants to Play This Season

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on February 2nd, 2021 at 2:22 PM

Jamal Crawford, who is 40, is still looking to play in the NBA this season. He played one game in the bubble before getting hurt, but he hasn't played at all in the 2020-2021 season. He still wants to.

He recently floated the idea that the NBA come up with a pool of available guys like him who could be quickly signed to any team that's having COVID issues. LINK.

Even though his career at U-M only lasted a few weeks, he's always been a huge Michigan supporter. I've loved, loved, loved the career that  he's had, and I never want it to end. And here's how old he is:

- He didn't play for John Beilein. He didn't play for Tommy Amaker. He played for Brian Ellerbe.

- He was on campus at the same time as Tom Brady.

I saw him play for M @ Purdue in that crackerbox gym.  We had no business winning that game - but he singlehandedly blew by every defender and got us the W.  It was incredible..

Havent checked records - but he's gotta be all time NBA points leader for former Michigan players   What an amazingly long NBA careeer.

Crawford got screwed by the NCAA.

Among Michigan alum, Crawford is:

  • #1 in total points, career
  • #6 in PPG (Chris Webber #1)
  • #1 in career FGA
  • #3 in career FGM (Chris Webber #1)
  • #3 in career FT% (behind active players Duncan Robinson and Derrick Walton)
  • #1 in career 3PA
  • #1 in career 3P
  • #2 in career assists (Rickey Green #1)
  • #7 in APG (Rickey Green #1)
  • #3 in career steals (Rickey Green #1)
  • #10 in career rebounds (Chris Webber #1)
  • #1 in TO career
  • #7 in PF career (Juwan Howard #1)

and of course, #1 in games and minutes

You're correct, he is the NBA leading scorer among Michigan alumni. I don't have anything to add to what the other replies have already said except a link to the basketball-reference page that lists all Michigan players in NBA/ABA history. Some interesting names there. THJ is top among all current players, and Duncan Robinson is shooting his way up the list (literally and figuratively).

He's got to be the leader.  According to basketball-reference.com, he's scored 19,419 career points in the NBA, which puts him #54 (NBA only, #58 NBA/ABA combined) - 172 behind Cliff Robinson for 50th all-time.

Glen Rice checks in at 18,336 (#73), CWebb at 17,182 (#94) and Juwan at 16,159 (#111).

EDIT: I really ought to refresh before responding to a tab I opened over an hour ago.

To some of us that doesn't seem so long ago. I was a student at UM when Anthony Carter was a senior and Harbaugh was coming in as the next Michigan QB.

Guys, Thank you for the stats work above.

I remember the first time I saw him play (on TV) and thought a) who is this guy?, b) where did he come from, and c) how did he land at Michigan.

As you all know (probably better than me) he was electric.

My bitterness with the NCAA is not diminished.

When I saw the thread I wondered how old he was.  I was thinking he must be 100 but that would make me older than 100.  His time at Michigan didn't work out the best but he has made the most out of what was given to him.  Go Blue and good luck at getting back in the show.

Go to that source of Michigan basketball alumni facts.  Cazzie may not be in the top stat group but he was the first significant alum and set the stage for the rest.  Rudy had a fabulous career, also before most of the others.  Of course, his coaching success really rounded out his contributions to the sport.  He is the lone M player in the Naismith Hall of Fame.  No doubt, Jamal Crawford and the others should be recognized for their outstanding careers.  Juwan still in progress!
