Jalen Hunt was not able to academically qualify for Iowa, qualifies for MSU

The Belleville graduate, who originally signed with Iowa as part of it's 2019 recruiting class, but did not academically qualify was planning to attend Iowa Western Comm College, instead joined the MSU football team over the weekend. Hunt was ranked the #16 player in the state of Michigan by 247 sports, and #48 DE in the country.

Don't know everything about the situation, but I think he was missing a class. He finished the class over the summer, but he won't be on scholarship at MSU until next season.

Is he eligible to play as a walk-on, though, provided he completes the required coursework?  I assume so, and in that case the jokes should still be allowed.

But seriously, I'm not inclined to make too much fun of a college student who may have gotten caught up in some technicalities.

FWIW this is an absolutely true story from my past.

I went to Cranbrook and like most teenagers of the late 70's I smoked a LOT of pot.  As such my dedication to grades wasnt the best (I think i pulled a whopping 1.9 GPA or something) but I absolutely crushed the SATs (1480).  So I was pretty confident I'd get into Michigan on my SAT scores alone (different era of admissions you youngsters) and that my dad, brother, sister, grandfather, great-grandfather and virtually every living or dead relative was a Michigan alum.

I was wrong.

But on the very day I received a very thin letter from Michigan telling me I did not currently meet their standards and rejecting my admission I also received a very thick package from one of my back-up schools Michigan State.  Unlike Michigan they not only admitted me, they offered me a FULL ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP if i would go there.  Both letters were dated the same day and I would give anything to go back in time and frame them for anyone who wants to debate the relative academic standards of both schools.

PS: I went to summer school at CMU my Freshman year - got my GPA up to about a 3.8, reapplied and then got in to M.

Good story. My son plays baseball for a juco who’s coach has a relationship with Bakich which is where my son is hoping to sign after this year. His freshman year he posted a 3.1 but was told by his advisors he needs to get that up for Michigan. I’m sure he would be accepted but there’s no money in baseball scholarships so it’s more for the academic cash he would need.

I am a teacher and I talk to the kids about where they apply to and if they got in.  I also get asked to write a lot of letters of recommendation for their applications.....there is a clear difference in admission standards at both schools to this day.

UofM is kind of a bit stingier with scholarships.  If MSU pulls one of our better students it is because they offered a free ride.

I don't think anyone would really question that UM has higher admissions standards than MSU. All you have to do is look at the acceptance rates. However, I can at least say that MSU's standards have apparently risen since then. That was my SAT score as well, and I was a National Merit Scholar from the PSAT, and all I got was in-state tuition (I was out of state) and free room and board. It was still substantial and I am grateful for it, but a full ride would have been nice.

Says a lot about you. I tried to do the same thing. Went to CMU my freshman year and almost failed out of there because I was too busy chasing the abundance of ladies on campus. Luckily I didn't get kicked out and got my act together after my parents cut me off, but by that time Michigan was a pipe dream.

Like you though, I couldn't get into Michigan out of HS, but was given a nice academic scholarship to MSU that I turned down. I would have blown that chance anyways even if I had taken it. Would have for sure been kicked out of MSU after a year.

My story... started partying early in high school, not the best grades but did take advanced courses.  Got accepted to WMU.  Best time of my life, or so they tell me. 9 months in failed out, with a 0.77 GPA.

Parents said they would pay for the best college I could get in.  Well after that fiasco, they said... son it's up to you now. Went to OCC... 3.76, Vice President of Honors Fraternity, Student Government, ski club.... etc.

Applied to UofM and WMU.  WMU accepted me into the Honors College on scholarship.  At the last minute, UofM.. . "oh, okay we'll take you".

Still paying off my student loans from putting myself through UofM (and grad school), but could never be more proud to a Uof M alum.

Your last sentence is why I'll never make fun of kids for going to Michigan State. Getting a full ride or a huge discount beats paying off student loans for 20 years. I could've gone to Michigan (maybe, probably. 3.3 GPA, 33 ACT) but I never even applied because of how expensive it was. Ended up playing Division 3 college ball and getting a ton of academic aid because of it. Shit is expensive
