Jake Long's One Penalty
I came across this blurb about Jake Long in Rivals' article about the top 25 college players in the Rivals Era:
13. Michigan OT Jake Long
SEASONS: 2003-07
BUZZ: Long redshirted as a true freshman season, then broke into the starting lineup in 2004 en route to starting 40 games. In his last 26 starts, Long was penalized just once in 1,743 plays. Long was a two-time captain and the first Michigan player to earn Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year accolades in consecutive seasons. He was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2008 draft.
Yes, yes, very good Jake, but when was that one penalty? Was it holding or a false start? Anybody know? Anybody have a clip of it?
I guess Long penalty==Hart fumble. Its amazing the quality/consistency of talent we had with those two and Henne.
I believe he held Vernon Gholston in his very last regular season game.
Correct, sir.
He felt it was fair because they don't throw flags for steroid use. *COUGH* (why he sucked in the nfl) *COUGH*
Are you sure the Gholston thing wasn't the first sack Long gave up that season--not the first penalty?
I could be wrong...but wasn't it in the bowl game with Florida? It was either that or the OSU game, can't remember...I know it was late in the season.
Maybe you're thinking of Mike Hart's ONE FUMBLE. I remember seeing that and feeling like I had just learned Santa was fake again. It made no sense.
Hart actually lost 2 fumbles that game (having only lost one other as a freshman).
You are needed now more than ever...
Jake says himself he was penalized twice -- a holding penalty his redshirt frosh year, and then a false start against N'western his senior year.

You should re-read the OP very carefully.
I read your post last night, re-read the OP, still confused. Re-read again -- still confused. Am I getting senile?
I believe TIMMMAAY was referring to this from the OP:
In his last 26 starts, Long was penalized just once in 1,743 plays.
You had the right answer, but technically speaking the OP was asking only about the second of Long's two penalties.
Now I may rest in peace.
It was indeed a hold against Vernon Gholston in the OSU game. Robmorren2 is correct. I actually met Jake long in the off-season last summer at the Fort Lauderdale airport. He's a nice guy but pretty quiet. My girlfriend and I talked to his girlfriend for a while who is also a U-M grad.
Ft. Lauderdale Airport seems to be the place to be. I too met Jake Long there (along with Chad Henne!) a few years ago. I got autographs from both of them and chatted with Henne for a few minutes. They were on their way to Ann Arbor to play in a celebrity golf tournament.
so jake long is the #1 OT and #13 player of the last decade but he didn't make their all-american team for the same time period?
what impresses me even more is that Big Jake was one of only ten or so football players who were able to pick up Gittleson's anvil. Now that's something to crow about!
One holding penalty was his redshirt frosh year. He hadn't given up a sack until Gholston. He also had that false start against NW. You might be confusing the sack by Gholston with a holding penalty.
