How OSU's national championship impacts Michigan

Submitted by WindyCityBlue on
Hard to say it, but congrats to OSU. With that said, I think an associated outcome that might impact Michigan is that the whole "we're here to win big ten championships" thing as our yearly goal dies. The bar is now clearly set in the big ten. We, as a conference, can hang with the big boys. Our goal should be make the playoffs and win NCs.

Also, for those who wished that OSU to lose the game (like me). Imagine how you would feel if we still had Hoke right now. Yikes!

"Revolution"

You say you want a revolution (in Michigan football)
Well, you know
We all want to change the (Big Ten) world
You tell me that it's evolution (in football offenses)
Well, you know
We all want to change the (East Division) world

But when you talk about destruction (of Michigan traditions)
Don't you know that you can count me out

Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Alright, alright

You say you got a real solution (in a new coach, in a new scheme)
Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution (for a PSD)
Well, you know
We're all doing what we can

But if you want money for people with minds that hate (Michigan tradition)
All I can tell you is brother you have to wait

Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Alright, alright, al...

You say you'll change the constitution (of the Athletic Department and Administration)
Well, you know
We all want to change (your) the old head
You tell me it's the institution (on Central Campus)
Well, you know
You'd better free your mind instead

But if (you) all they do is  go carrying pictures of (Chairman Mao) Jim Harbaugh
The team (You) ain't going to make it (with anyone anyhow) just on that.

Don't you know know it's gonna be alright
Alright, alright

Alright, alright
Alright, alright
Alright, alright
Alright, alright (enough, let's see what Spring ball looks like and the season)

This will help Michigan if and only if Michigan starts beating Ohio State again. For the simple reason that beating Ohio State -- and winning the B1G East -- just gained more weight in the eyes of, well, everybody.

It is stomach-turning that this OSU team will likely always be in the conversation among the best college football teams ever. The "third-string quarterback" meme alone assures their place in history. That can't be undone. But there's a high-quality balm for that pain. Beat them in 2015.

IIRC, their offense is almost entirely back, but they lose some key pieces on defense. With a good (and healthy) defense, which Michigan may well have, it can be done.

OSU winning the NC doesn't change anything for head to head recruiting battles. Recruits have seen Michigan struggle for 8 years. Which means they were UNDER 10 YEARS OLD last time we were relevant (save 2011 blip). Ohio State had been good to great that whole time. Kids know Ohio State and that hasn't changed. I also don't think them winning an NC will draw more kids from the south.

Winning an NC does help both schools nationally as it shows the Big Ten is relevant and capable. Harbaugh brings that advantage for us.

OSU winning the NC doesn't change anything for head to head recruiting battles.

Yes it does. Meyer can point to his national championship and say, "Ohio State is the only Big Ten program to win one of these in the past decade." Michigan has no response other than, "We're building to that point."

My point is how is that different than before winning the NC? Meyer could always point to OSUs continued success for many years and our floundering. This changes the national foot print for them, but we weren't battling head to head for those kinds of recruits too much.

They landed 3 top 25 players yesterday.  OSU will continue to get quality players and it their recruiting will improve.

I agree that until Michigan can start beating OSU it will continue to be an uphill battle for recruits.

I think we need to stop using our rivals' successes as a litmus test for ourselves, especially in a negative way. Will this affect recruiting? Maybe in a small way, maybe in a few head to head battles. But it's not like there are only 15 good players out there and Ohio State is getting all of them. The Harbaugh era has just begun and yes, we have some catching up to do because they have had a head start. But don't underestimate the power of our program and what we have to offer. I'm really sad to see the pessimism here. I thought that was past us. I hated to see Ohio State win more than anything; I woke up angry. But their success has nothing to do with us.

It is understandable that many may be unhappy with last night and wanted an Oregon victory. BUT many should actually be happy. Why?

1. Big Ten champ beat decisively the best team of the PAC-12 and SEC. No ifs and or buts.

2. The team put together by OSU while clearly very good and well coached and prepared was not a once in a life time team full of all team greats. OSU has had better RBs and while Cardale Jones is a surprise he still has a lot of rough edges to polish. Just recall how well JaMarcus Russell and Vince Young looked at one point. This should give ALL teams in the BIG Ten especially Michigan optimism because this is the type of team we can also build.

3. Even with gross oversigning the best teams can only pick up 30 some kids a year. There are a lot of very good to great ball players who can be molded into a great team. We just have get them.

4. In summary - great win for the league, great for the Wolverines in the long run, but most importantly it shows one can have a championship team from a cold snowy place without only super star recruits. If OSU can do it so can the UM.

Go Blue! Now go get some sleep.
