How Michigan routing Stanford led to chariot and animal races

Great article on the first Rose Bowl from The Athletic:

Among other tidbits, M contended with an interesting public health wrinkle in that day and age as well:

"Leaving nothing to chance, Michigan brought its own supply of water to "insure the men against any stomach derangement.”

And may history repeat itself on this follow-up point, as well:

"Michigan’s talent advantage was assumed, so logistical and environmental factors became the biggest wild cards."

I sincerely hope we follow history's lessons and bring our own water supply to Miami.  Stomach derangements cannot be discounted if we rely on South Florida's brackish water for sustenance.

I haven't read all the history and stories behind this, so maybe there's a good explanation:

Isn't the Jug tiny, if its supposed to supply water to the entire football team for a roadtrip?  Or is it like "well, there's the Jug we serve out of, and there's also these 3 other giant containers of water we brought from Michigan"

Captain of the Michigan squad:  Hugh White. When the score became insurmountably one-sided, the captain of the Stanford team approached Hugh White and requested that the remainder of the game be called off, and White graciously concurred.

Great article. Among other things loved that Michigan brought their own water back then.

There was an offer from The Athletic for $3.99 per month for a year with an upfront one time payment of $48.00. I took it.

I know there may be better deals occasionally but I think it's a fair price and I want them to survive.

As is usual they will move it up to full price after one year if you don't take some kind of action on it at that time.

PS Been tempted to pull the trigger for a few years on subscribing to The Athletic. Today was the day.

I've found the subscription worth it.  I follow M, a favorite soccer club and erstwhile "local" teams.

Spent about five years in Tokyo in mid to late nineties and would have loved to have had a site like that to quell the sports homesickness.  Internet just barely existed then, and I subsisted on what the International Herald and Armed Forces radio could give me.   And Sumo.
