How to find copies of specific game broadcasts - legally?

Submitted by crg on February 24th, 2021 at 9:29 AM

I am curious about finding [legal] copies of old game broadcasts (emphasis on Michigan sports, but can be generalized to other schools).  If someone wanted a specific obscure game (that was televised), can they purchase it directly from the AD or the broadcast carrier/network?  Perhaps as a box set of that entire season if not individually?

I am not looking for something specific just now (and am not morally opposed to an online download - I do *not* view that as "piracy").  However, I would like to know what the options are for future reference - and I assume others on this board have wanted to find (have found) old Michigan games already.

Thanks!

I think part of it was when he referred to people who liked LeBron as "Bronsexuals" and Ace didn't like it.

I also saw something about them getting into an argument on Twitter and Ace decided to nuke his account here for a dispute on a different platform.

?

Someone correct me or add details if I'm missing something

Here's my recollection...

He posted here something derogatory about fans of Lebron James.  That was intrepeted by Ace to be a homophobic slur and for what Ace considered was a personal attack on someone in another comment.

Ace whacked him.

WD's response on twitter burned just about every bridge in Pittsburgh.

Ace, if I got that wrong, please do correct me.

I'm sure WD has your answer.  He probably has the videos!  (Doesn't he have Winged Historian's old archive?)  I hear he can be found on the Michigan Reddit thread.

Perhaps Winged Historian would be a better source of such information, though?

Appreciate the integrity but personally, I have no problems getting unlicensed copies given the number of times I've been fucked by media outlets.

Like ordering NHL Center Ice and having Red Wings games (when they were good) blacked out.  Or my DSTV going up 300% just because the month on the calendar flipped.

When asked during a SSBI investigation if I've ever 'stolen' anything digitally, I told the investigator the same.  They didn't seem to have a problem with it.

I have almost all the football games on VHS from 1997 - 2004 and DVD from 2005-2017. I finally broke the habit when I realized there is this thing called the internet. I still have all the VHS and DVDs. Just in case.

There is no legal way to get copies of old games unless you get the permission from the university and NCAA. And they do not have old games available for purchase.

All of the copies on Youtube and various sources are illegal and are only there because the authorities have not acted on them.

So most of the game before - recent time, like very recent time- where not recorded on digital support (that are not a tape, yes from 2000 until recently the game where recorded on digital tape) by the TV station.

It becomes very interesting, the TV station (even a local one) is usually owned by a bigger group like ABC. And they own the right to the tape (And have the tape) but do not own the right of the game that is owned by the conference (In the case of Michigan Football or any sport: B1G).

Unless, they have a specific needs - Say the game was super special and they decide to air it again or someone want to do a documentary (Say Michigan Football 2002) ... ABC (and co) have little to no interest in transferring the tape into virtual support (Like a Hard drive) - Because it is time consuming and it cost money (They usually charge around $1.5K to do so if they locate the tape...).

Say ABC wants to air the game again, they would have to pay a licence to the B1G (around $200 per sec and that does not include the audio commentary!... If you were to create a On demande service it is cheaper $105 per second)...

Then you will have to obtain the school approval and in some case, some players agreements... I guess more money.

Not to get too technical. But you start to see why nobody really do that...

I know all of it because, I wondered if a on demand service where you can go and watch any past game would be appealing to people. I sort of pitched my idea to some "higher" people around at the B1G and UM, etc.

They all laugh because nobody is ready to negotiate the cost at each end or even facilitate that.
