How big is this game?

Submitted by MichFan1997 on

I have tried arguing with people, that this is the BIGGEST game we have had since OSU in the 1 v 2 showdown in 2006. So much is at stake in this game. Agree, disagree? Thoughts?....

This would be the biggest win for the RR era so yes- it's very important. They seal this game and the Kool-Aid cup will over flow with bountiful sweetness. Prep your couches Sparty!

UConn might have been bigger.  We simply could not have afforded to lose that day, on the stadium's rededication, when RR was dealing with an offseason of bad press.

But anyway, though, this is certainly a great opportunity for RR.  A chance to beat a top 25 team, take back control of the state, and clinch bowl eligibility.  With a win Saturday, I think any lingerering doubts about his job security will be silenced.

This game is HUGE. Consider this:

(1) If we lose that will be 3 years in a row and I am already sick of their trash talk which will only expand exponentially AND that puts us in the position of having to go on the road to avoid an INCONCEIVABLE 4th loss in a row.

(2)It would make us bowl elligble and a game ahead of last year while still UNDEFEATED. Things continue to get more fun as anticipation for the rest of the season grows.

(3) A win would be another big boost to this team's confidence. Nothing breeds winning like winning. The rest of the season would look winable if we stay focused and take one game at a time. It sounds stupid but Momentum IS important in sports.

(4) A loss would bring about fears of a repeat of last year's colapse and more grumblings about RR's seat getting hotter from ignorant media types.

(5) A win writes another chapter in the legend of Denard. He brings our program all sorts of positive publicity which is great for our recruiting and just a big plus in general. Much of the nation was here to fore entirely ignorant of the properties or even the very existance of dilithium, now Michigan is on everyone's lips as the only naturally occuring deposit of this rare and valuable element. A loss will bring out the naysayers who will proclaim that Denard has shot his bolt and Michigan is just yesterday's story again.

(6) It is our only home rivalry game this year.

(7) Finally it is a big step toward making the Ohio State game the REALLY BIG game it ought to be.

GO BLUE!

To me, its the biggest Mich. vs. Mich St. game that we've had in quite a while.  2 losing seasons, 2 MSU losses, 5-0 vs. 5-0, bowl eligibility, Denard, Heisman, the team repeating "The Team" to the media.

p.s. and unfortunately D's heart attack and impending return.

Any coach will tell you that...in public....

In private, Rich Rod wants to stuff this game right up Lt. Dan's arrogant backside (with all due respect to his recovery....)

He knows that he has to continue to establish his version of Michigan, not just in state, but nationally.

A win continues to bring positve coverage to the program and  another step to secure more top talent (yes, Mr. Zettel thats you and you too Mr. Frost and Mr. Wall and even you Mr. Ross)

A win puts the program on the door step of a special season.....

Yeah this is a Big game, but its not the end all be all......

that in terms of the program, I think that this game is bigger than Football Armagedon, clearly not in terms of hype, but possibly in terms of effect.  Michigan is young, very talented, and they present huge problems for most if not all teams in the Big Ten.  After State, we have Iowa at home, then a bye week before Penn State, which would be huge win while not being a great team.  If M beats State, I think things are going to get very interesting for this team, and the results could be special.  They beat State, I think Iowa is a win, and I think Penn State is more than realistic.  M gets to 7-0 or heaven for bid 8-0, refresh the recruiting page every minute to see the newest commitments.  This game is massive.  It is scary to acknowledge its full importance, but it is very very big.

At this point, Michigan has accomplished exactly what it did last year: beat its non-conference foes, plus Indiana. The schedule this year was a bit harder: they had only one MAC opponent, and had to beat both ND and Indiana on the road. Still, the rules say that every win counts the same, and all Michigan has is 5 of them, same as last year.

Beating MSU is the first opportunity to make a statement that 2010 really is different. Of course, there will be other opportunities — Iowa next week, Penn State after that. But there is hardly a better opportunity than MSU, until of course Ohio State at the end of the season.

This game will restore the order of things. I grew up with Michigan dominating this series. Heck all sparty fans grew up with Michigan dominating the series. A UM win on Saturday and all is good in the world again...

I really think we need this win to continue the momentum going forward into the heart of the schedule.

On a personal level, I do not want to see us drop three in a row to these bastards.

but less because it's MSU, more because of the circumstances.   We're facing a conference foe ranked in the 15-20 range.   For elite teams, this is definitely a game that SHOULD be won.   For teams that want to be an elite team (or in Michigan's case, return to being an elite team), its one that you absolutely MUST win.

A win silences comparisons to last year and really legitmizes the notion that Michigan is back.   It also sets up a very big game with Iowa next week-- one that will have even more national prominence than this week's game (probably the game of the week along with Auburn-Arkansas).    It also would likely help with recruiting.

While a loss wouldn't destroy the chance for a great season, it would definitely erase a lot of the momentum that we've built up.   We might fall out of the Top 25, it would keep the critics talking about last year and it would set up the Iowa game as a firewall instead of another step forward.

So, yeah beating State would be nice, but it's about a lot more than silencing our little brother.

Also, win or lose this game, I think that next week's game with Iowa will be more important than this one.
