Hoosier stats

It's been so easy to sip on the Kool-Aid of a 3-0 start, but life in Camelot has to end someday, doesn't it? There is a possibility of rain Saturday and we have a 3-0 IU team coming into town that is likewise looking to become 4-0. I don't want us to just be looking forward to the Saturday game and expecting a win; I put some stats together so you can know a little something about the opponent. Offensively, they are averaging 26.7 points per game, but scoring has improved each game: 19, 23, 38. This is 9th in the Big Ten. Their quarterback, Ben Chapelle, has a qb rating of 134.3 and has completed 68.5% of his passes. He had 3 td passes but also 3 int's. Team passing yards is 686, 6th best in the conference. Leading Rusher is Demetrius McCray. He is averaging 76 ypg and 5.4 per carry. He shares the load with three guys who have 12 or more carries and they average 3.4 yards per carry. Total rush yards is 440, which is 7th in the conference. Leading receivers are Tandon Doss and Damario Belcher with 21 and 16 receptions with an average of 12.9 and 11.4 ypc respectively. They are 6th in the conference in receiving yards. They are the most penalized team in the Big Ten with 25 penalties over 3 games. Defensively, they are only giving up 17.7 points per game, good enough for 4th in the league, but their opponents have been Eastern Kentucky, Western Michigan, and Akron. In the game against Akron, the Zips were playing without their starting quarterback; consequently, the Zips made 4 ints and were held to 271 total yards of offense. We have the better team. We are leading the Big Ten in scoring at 38 points per game, and defensively holding opponents to 19.3 points per game, good enough for 5th in the league. Let's hope the team continues to improve and we win comfortably.

Minor quibble, but when I read 686 passing yards were 6th in the league, I did a double take because I was thinking NCAA=league. As far as comparing stats right now to other people in the conference, I don't think it's a really good indicator based on the varying levels of cupcakes and/or first game stat spikes (see Iowa before they solidified their RB situation). That said, this post was a great idea just to get information out on the Hoosiers.

They are also able to bend time and space. I watched the replay of the IU-Akron game last night, and at one point the terrible announcer said that, after crossing midfield, they had reached the "52 yard-line." I suggest that Michigan steals this wormhole technology from the Hoosiers, and establishes a new base of operations on the 53 yard-line, where we will be invisible to both opponents and officials. Then the domination of the universe can truly begin.

Hopefully RR and the team can continue to bring their A-game no matter who the opponent is. If we do not play down to IU, we should dominate this game. IU nearly lost to EKU and WMU and got a gift from Arkon.

I think we'll find a lot out about both Michigan and Indiana on Saturday. Most people are writing us off as beating "Two MAC teams with a mediocre Notre Dame in between". Indiana fans are very confident and think they will upset Michigan. Michigan's advantage lies in it's speed on both sides of the ball. Indiana isn't particularly dynamic on offense, so it be up to Michigan's offense vs. Indiana's defense.

The big take away on this is that we should not underestimate Indiana. Also both teams have played against Western Michigan, this is perhaps the best indication of how good each team may or may not be with respect to each other. I haven't looked at the stats much but we did a better job on WMU than Indiana. Indiana's defense looks to be decent, but thier offense is not all that great. So as mentioned above I think the key part of the game is Michigan's offense vs. the Indiana defense.

We were ahead of WMU 31-0 at the end of the first half and pretty much shut it down in the second half. We put in Sheridan in the red zone and he threw a pick. And then we put in Cone. We could have put up more points if we kept our foot on the pedal. We will have no trouble with Indiana. It is the one Big Ten team this year we probably could beat with last year's team.
