Hockey Refs: WTF??

Submitted by marlon on
In contravention of the rules, the refs allow a goal to stand even though the puck was clearly directed in by the ND player's skate. Then they award a penalty shot to ND on a very, very questionable call. Really, refs: WTF?!?

Are you kidding, he slashed him across his arm and body twice. The first goal was iffy I agree but the penalty shot was an easy call. I just hope we don't have to pull the goalie before the 3rd period.

I think it's right. Thang had a breakaway, Kampfer came up from behind (about time HE did that for a change!) and slashed/hooked him across the midsection to prevent a shot. Kampfer didn't try to play the puck, he just tried to interfere and prevent a shot, and therefore Thang was awarded a penalty shot.

When the goal at end of the game with about 30 seconds remaining got waved off? The call from the booth was correct. The whistle blew before the puck crossed the line. However, as Michigan Arrogance pointed out, the whistle blew while the puck was still loose. It was covered for a second, so it wasn't the worst call in the world, but the goalie never had control of the puck. I normally feel mad about these things, but not THIS mad. I guess this is like the fourth or fifth botched call on a team I cheer for this season, where the call was clearly incorrect...

still a pretty awesome game. we played notre dame pretty even in the first and second and we demolished them in the 3rd. that game couldve gone either way. and i'm glad that if notre dame is going to escape with a win, at least they almost crapped themselves in the process. i just wish the offense had gotten going before the 3rd

Ridiculous. Inexcusably poor job on the first goal, especially the review. The whistle-blow at the end was all too fitting. This was a textbook job of awful officiating, wire-to-wire.

The penalty shot was the right call. It doesn't matter what the severity of the penalty was--the guy had a breakaway, he had a stride on the defender, and was prevented from getting the shot off by the slash. But the call at the end of the game... Referee Philo was right on the goal, looking at the loose puck, and he did not blow the play dead. Referee Aaron, standing at the blue line, blew it dead. Watch the replay--Philo is on top of the play, covering it perfectly. The puck is shot, it is loose, and it is shot into the net. When it goes in the net, Philo does not signal "no goal"; he looks in confusion at his partner. Caporusso and a couple of other Michigan players skate toward Aaron (who is now skating toward the net from the blue line) and the Michigan players are shouting at him in anger. Notice it was Aaron who went into the booth to watch the replay. The guy who reviews the call is the one who makes the initial call. That goal was taken from us by a referee who had no business at all having the whistle in his mouth. The guy who had the call was going to get it right--but he wasn't allowed to get it right due to his partner's mistake.

That's the problem I have with the situation. It wasn't that it was blown dead, because I understand that the refs have to err on the side of conservancy to protect the goal and such. But the ref FARTHEST away from the play is the one who made the call. He was at the blue line, I should know, my seats are right there. With 25 seconds left in the game, you better be DAMN sure that the puck is covered before you call it. Unfortunately, that was not done. Michigan should complain to the CCHA about the frequent officiating screw-ups. Nothing can change what happened. ND gets a win. But this can't keep happening. This isn't he first time, and I doubt it will be the last. If I performed this poorly at my job, I'd be fired. I know reffing is hard, I used to do it for other sports, but if it is your paid profession you ought to be pretty good at it. Good enough to know that when you're at the blue line, you should let the refs right by the net decide if the puck is covered or not.

so notre dame's first goal was scored the exact same way that we scored a goal against miami (tim miller): deflected off the skate. difference? ours was disallowed, while notre dame's was not. thanks for handing that one to ND

Obviously the referees are not privy to the new rule regarding kicked goals. The rule was changed to attempt to eliminate the amount of discretion given to the referees. The new rule states that a puck may not be directed into the net by a skate by a kicking motion, and it also may not be directed using the skate. By the old rule this was a goal, by the new rule, it isn't. Also, Aaron is a complete moron. Also also, I think we got outplayed the first half of the game. The penalty shot was the correct call, as Thang had a step and was severely impeded on his shot. I just looked up the rule the other day because I got into an argument about it. That one is up to the referee's discretion; however, this one I agree on. Thang buried that shot, too.
