Heroes and Goats or "I can't wait for UFR and Need to Get it Out"

Submitted by Flatout on

As a huge soccer/other football fan, one of my favorite part of any soccer recap is the "Los Mas y los Menos" or "Most and Less" part where individual players are singled out. Here's a UM version. Heroes and Goats. Post your own...

Goats:

Mouton (consistently overran and didn't tackle),

Warren (love the guy but this was the worst game of his career. Everybody gangs up on Trent but Warren had a significant number of miscues in this game. He got owned by Cumberland and Benn on quite a few plays),

Stewart (gave up two huge plays),

Thompson (got powned on the screen td and consistently couldnt track down their rb or Juice sideline to sideline),

Threet (he's a freshman but dude...I'll just leave it at that),

The o-line (didnt help out at all after 1st quarter, finally gave up an avalanche of sacks) and

Shaw (maybe a little too harsh but that fumble was a killer)

KC (maybe didn't cost us the game but didn't get it done when his number was called, more like Kicking Suckage than Kicking Competency in this game)

Heroes:

Zoltan (he really WAS the Space Emperor, great Punting),

Odoms (over 300 all purpose yards as a freshman = damn. Potential Steve Smith/Wes Welker in college clone),

McGuffie (consistently made something out of nothing but the line and Threet's reads made just getting back to the LOS an adventure),

Minor (He didn't get that many carries and did his usualy fumble but I was REALLY impressed with his work in pass pro. I'm just trying to look on the bright side)

Matthews (pretty solid day),

Moundros (very good at pass pro, got a TD, was about the only one getting good blocks in the running game)

Who else? Err..... Graham? Maybe? He got a sack...

The coaching staff.  For the love of the baby jebus, BALL SECURITY, BALL SECURITY, BALL SECURITY.

I'm willing to buy into the idea that RR doesn't have his guys, and that we were decimated in several key areas, but hang on to the damn ball.  That is unacceptable.

Graham gave up responsibility on his gap on Juice's long run - that was on him. So, knock him off the hero list.

I would love for someone to break down the success of our passing game on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down this season.  A lot of times this year, we've fallen into the trap of only throwing past the sticks on obvious downs, which just makes it that much more difficult to execute.  In the first half against Wisconsin, and again in the 2nd and 3rd quarters yesterday, we seemed to run on first down 80-90% of the time - usually for nothing.  And then we'd be put in obvious passing situations, the defense would blitz, and Threet would frequently be forced into a hurried throw.

I know the conventional wisdom is that you have to protect a young passer by developing a run-first offense, but our running game is so bad right now - and defenses are so prepared for us to run on first down - that most of these carries are turning into wasted downs.  McGuffie meets a defender in the backfield on a regular basis.  In the second half against Wisconsin, we become a lot more pass-oriented on first downs and we saw the offense perk up.  I think we're going to have to continue with that, even if it means living with some freshman mistakes by Threet.

All these "throw more!" comments ignore the fact that we can't really pass-block either, and Threet is extremely inaccurate.

As inaccurate as Threet is, at least he's throwing at the open guy that vast majority of the time.  Mallett made a lot more throws into double coverage with a better line, run game, and receivers.

I swear to God these "We need to throw more people" are killing me.

The lady behind me said this at halfime, for serious:

"They need to start throwing the ball more, this is getting ridiculous.  I think they need to put Sheridan in, he's the better passer, I'm sorry but it's true."

WTF??? NO IT'S NOT TRUE YOU STUPID BITCH!!!  HAVE YOU WATCHED ONE FUCKING GAME THIS YEAR??? ARRRRRRRRR!!!!  Well, that's what I was saying in my head.

As you probably recall, at that time the score was 17-14 Illinois, and in my opinion the two teams were playing a pretty evenly matched game.  Why, in the name of all that is holy, does this stupid ass think we need to throw more?  Holy hell I hate our fans sometimes.

Hey man, you can' bitch and moan about how our fans are uninformed, as this happens at a lot of places.  There are many people who don't get depressed after we lose a game (I know its hard to believe, but it is true).  She was probably just repeating something that she heard from another misinformed fan.  There are many people who can't spend as much time on the interwebs as we do, or those just don't care that much.

Good point. Your're on the money on that one. He really wasn't meant to be on the list, more like a weak semi-sarcastic, searching for something positive end note (I take responsability) . He wasn't to fault on Juice's red zone td run though. When facing an option tackle each and every option. He took his down while the lb's just stood and stared at him instead of taking out the other option (Juice).

This is why I want to see a breakdown of how our passing game performs on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down.  My belief is that it is probably most successful on 1st down, when it isn't an obvious passing situation and the defense is less likely to blitz and put more pressure on our pass protection.

Guys, enough with the insults.  I'm not calling for us to throw on every down, or even more total passes than we are right now.  What I would like to see is us simply mix up our sequencing so we aren't telegraphing to the defense what we're doing each down.  Right now, here's pretty much how our offense functions.  First down is a handoff to McGuffie, who is typically met in the backfield and loses a yard or maybe fights back to the line of scrimmage.  Second down is a little screen, often also to McGuffie, who is typically tackled immediately.  Third down we have to throw beyond the sticks, and the defense tees off on Threet and frequently forces him to get rid of it before he's ready, leading to an inaccurate throw.

McGuffie had 19 carries for 70 yards yesterday.  That's a 3.6 average, which is tolerable.  Problem is, about 20 of his yards came on one carry, and he had two others of about 15 yards.  The other 16 carries netted barely a yard a pop.  That's not a functional ground attack.  Mixing up the play-sequencing (which can also include calling runs on passing downs) might help the opposing D honest.  At this point defenses are fully committing themselves to the run on most first downs and McGuffie (and the other backs) have no chance.

That wasn't really directed at you, I was more venting about that idiot at the game.

Their first down play calling is getting to be a bit like the typical "Hand off to Hart, run toward Long" of the last few years.  BUT....I'd like to "look at the tape" (LOL - Rod Marinelli) first to see those first down plays.

Michigan ran on 17 first down plays. Passed on 13 first down plays. Seems like balance, but the final four first down throws came when down 45-20, three of those in the final minutes.

Down 24-14, after the Threet/Shaw lost fumble exchange it was a 16 to 6 run/pass on first down ratio. I am sure if LC was the coach, there would be a loud, familiar pitch fork crowd ready to burn the house down.

Threet first down passing: 5/9, 74 yards. Odoms 4 catches for 67 yards....although these stats dont include any offensive plays once the game was 45-20.

First down runs as a team: 18 carries for 42 yards.

Sam: 13 carries, 31 yards with one 18-yarder and eight carries for 1 yard, no gain or a loss. He also had first down runs of 2, 3, 4 and 7 yards. Became more ineffective as the game went on, his last six first down carries went for 0, 1, -1, -1, -2 and 0 yards.

Do with those stats as you will.
