Wearing a Michigan sweatshirt and hat, he listened intently as Jerria Martin, who served as his unofficial tour guide for the day, told him about the history of Selma and the Bloody Sunday march.

“It was a powerful part of change for our country and just to be able to be here and meet some people that affected that change and understand what they were up against and what their courage had to be like, what their vision [was] and ultimately understand their success was something I thought I could learn from and draw inspiration from and I did,” Harbaugh said. “I’m glad that we’re here.”

“Even though I’m a diehard Roll Tide fan, it gives me great joy to show our city to this group of just awesome folk, who are here not only to witness history and our historic past but to learn about our hopeful future,” Martin said.

Not only did Harbaugh ask Martin about the history, but he also asked about the city’s school system, the city’s job situation and other topics.

“He was really concerned about Selma,” Martin said.

Even though he said he’d had a couple of “Roll Tides” and “War Eagles” yelled his way, he said he was enjoying his stop in SEC country.

“It’s all good; it’s all good. My priorities in the North are faith, family and football and I know that’s what they are here,” Harbaugh said. “I have a real connection to all the people that I’ve met and I feel at home here. I really, really do. There’s so many things I love about it. The people and the hospitality have been at the top of the list. That’s been No. 1. Good down to earth genuine, good people. I’m happy here and I’m enjoying myself immensely.”

This is awesome!

My wife grew up in Selma, we got married there and we spend quite a bit of time there. The place has some serious struggles that the national media focus has paid little attention to. I'd say that the single comment regarding JH asking about the schools and job situation is more than any of the long list of famous visitors has cared to consider or want to know. I honestly just gained so much respect for him reading that, not that I didn't already have respect for him. But this man is the real deal. Selma is a special place in many ways but I think so many things have been glossed over as just a PR opportunity for many visitors of late and clearly he was looking to make a deeper connection and I think that's awesome. Clearly this is a habit and not a coincidence. I'd even go so far as to say that above all the Harbawesomeness this is actually his trademark quality. He's a genuine person who tries to connect on a deeper level with everyone he comes in contact with. He has an intellectual curiosity that is the core of his being.

Marge and Homer separating, and SideShow Bob finally killing Bart (albeit in the Halloween special).  Sounds like they are really getting desperate to come up with ideas that keep viewers interested...

Add in the fact they are losing Harry Shearer and it certainly seems like the end of the Simpsons is finally in sight.

The fact that he didn't have to make such a side trip but did and then asked genuine questions in an effort to understand and connect to the people there tells you a lot about Jim Harbaugh - a lot of very good things. He is, as someone said, intellectually curious and more than visit, he wants to know and experience. We definitely see it in his approach to football, camps and the like, but it simply seems to be part of the core Harbaugh, if you will.

You're welcome Stephen. I found the story moving and hopeful. A lot of people say he's right wing and the Sniper stuff certainly paints that picture, but this shows me he's reachable. I think with many, if not most people, it's just a matter of what information you have, what you've been taught or exposed to and what you haven't.

The very fact that he and his son and other coaches needed to be taught this stuff still at their ages is a total indictment of our education system, media, popular culture, business culture and of course our politics and government. You can't even begin to address problems or injustice if you don't know about them, know the history, know the truth, and see how it fits into the picture of what's actually going on, what's happened and is happening and how it all connects.

Asking the questions he asked about the jobs etc. is a good step. Until we as a country start to understand the real state of things, what our real problems are and what's caused and causing them, we're doomed. It's damn close to too late to make the radical changes we need to save ourselves & about too late to have the ability to effect change, so if anything can be done we better start now.

would lose support if he followed suit. This may be the PR coup de grace in a long season of great moves by Harbaugh.

EDIT: And I don't mean to suggest his visit isn't heartfelt, just that this earns us a kind of street cred that cannot be purchased by bag men.
