Harbaugh lists freshmen who could see playing time

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

There was that thread yesterday about Harbaugh saying 10 freshmen could play.

Well, he listed more than 10 when asked by Brandstatter on tonight's Inside Michigan Football radio show. He named-

  • Rashan Gary
  • Devin Asiasi
  • Chris Evans
  • Khaleke Hudson
  • Quinn Nordin
  • Devin Bush
  • Josh Uche
  • Elysee Mbem-Bosse
  • David Long
  • Lavert Hill
  • Ben Bredeson
  • Eddie McDoom
  • Nate Johnson

I think weight gets a little over blown sometimes, especially at the LB position. Obviously there are times when you need that bulk to hold up against the run, but I think he's playing more of a get to the QB as fast as you possibly can role. He's not going to give you extended snaps at the position, but I think he has the ability to be a contributor in certain situations.

That's 12 lbs heavier than Peppers. Now go look at the SAM position under Don Brown at BC. They utilize players of that build at SAM consistently. That IS the body type he prefers. This isn't a traditional 4-3 defense when it comes to SAM. He has said SAM is more comparable to the hybrid space player than it is a traditional 4-3 SAM. It's more of a speed rush type player.

Not quite the same. Walker is at best 4th on the depth chart at tailback and isn't likely to be any higher at any of the specialist roles (3rd down back, short yardage back, etc). Asiasi is the primary backup to Wheatley at "big" TE, which is a position that's probably on the field 30-40% of all snaps.

They don't typically play 5 rb sets, at least that I'd noticed. They do, however, run quite a few 5 TE sets, and being near 300 lbs Asiasi could be one of our better blocking TEs as well.

No Onwenu is the bigger surprise after Harbaugh called him his favorite player.

Kareem is/was hurt and we have a log jam...there is no reason to play him unless he's an elite RB which everyone seemed to calm the hype on him late in the recruiting process and his rating fell a little bit. Spring camp reports seemed to indicate he'll be a solid back in a couple years, but he's not the second coming of Fournette.

Or Kekoa Crawford. He's been getting some hype thru camp as well. I really don't see the need to play all three freshman WRs, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them all get some snaps either. Need to ramp up competition for next year with the top two guys graduating.

I'd love to see us redshirt Uche and EM-B...Furbush, Jones, Wroblewski, Wangler have to be able to give us some solid snaps as backup LBs.

but I think a lot of focus this year - aside from meritocracy - has to be on getting folks in position for next year when we lose so much.  Outside of OL (on which you can't really rotate), every other position that is going to be hit by attrition next year need to get those kids some true game experience.

Heck I would play even more Frosh if the 1st three games are blowouts and then have a turf-toe "epidemic" to get injury RS's for all those not expected to contribute during the B1G season.

To the poster below - I am hoping Crawford was an accidental ommision by JH.

I love Harbaugh...but I don't believe for a second he's going to remember the names of every true freshman who he plans to play during an interview. He's just not wired that way and it wouldn't be surprising at all if he simply forgot a name or two...also wouldn't be surprised if he named a name or two that end up with a redshirt.

I feel like at this point we all know his mind is moving 100mph and interviews should be taken seriously, but not as 100% fact of what's going to happen.

It would be hard for anyone to remember every single name on the spot...but for Harbaugh, like I said...maybe it's 100% accurate, but it shouldn't shock anyone if a couple players were simply forgotten at the time of the question.

I feel like you could ask him the same thing right now and get a few different names and have a few of these left off.

Given the amount of cleanup I've had to do in a couple threads today because of things said in the presser, you do not get the impression that everyone is on the same page with the whole "Jim Harbaugh is human" thing, but I could be misinterpreting the overreactions and general insanity of others.

Gotta think that if Johnson and McDoom are there, Crawford should be too. Even more likely than Onwenu to be simply an oversight, I think.

It's tricky for a few reasons. You have to figure out who your best lineman are no matter what, right or left side. If there is an injury, your best backup may move right or left. LT may be young, but your best players are seeing the field. If you need to fill LG for some reason, next man up. Best players see the field.

If true, that is a perfect example of how things have changed under Harbaugh. I only know of 2 offensive linemen who didn't redshirt before Harbaugh got here, at least in the last 20 years or so. Onewenu/Bredeson would make 3 in Harbaugh's first two years.

Suprised to see Nordin and Uche listed on there. Nordin is uber talented but he has a solid Kenny Allen in front of him. Uche will be a good one but he came in needing to add alot of weight.
