Great Article on former M Hockey Goalie Al Montoya
CNN/SI ran a nice article on former M goaltender Al Montoya who finally appears to have landed in the NHL with the Islanders.
If my memory serves me correctly thats the mask he wore at Michigan

That is the same mask. Doesn't look as cool now though.
I have to say, Nike made a much better hockey jersey than Adidas.March 25th, 2011 at 11:14 PM ^
reminds me of this:

Disagree slightly, any difference is negligible (for hockey):

I agree.

I always wondered why he left early. I thought most of the guys that leave early have a pretty quick timeline to play in the NHL and he had no assurances that he was going to be called up.

To continue the digression, the Islanders AHL affiliate is the Tigers. Now that he's with a team that can't concievably be turned into an animal face I would assume he'll change soon.
Has anyone seen a Michigan hockey helmet up close? I was surprised to see that it is actually maize tape that makes up the winged helmet. Thought they would be painted. Oh well.

I think the second coolest part (other than the wings) is that he has banners from previous years on the side of his mask.
And to answer your question, for some reason I did know that the hockey helmets were taped. Not sure why though.
they taped the hockey helmuts. they may be painted today, but bynow they are chipped and scratched, etc. so they used tape to make it look good for tv, since they probalby did not have enough time for the paint to dry before hand.
or at least that is my take on it.
