Playing the devil's advocate here (I'm not arguing for/against his guilt):
If you're Gibbons, and IF charges are never brought against you, do you sue U-M? Your reputation has been destroyed following a rather murky, ex post facto process. You could probably mount a civil case against the University here. (I don't know if you'd win, but you could make a case.)

Yes. About five minutes after the statute of limitations runs out for rape. And not a minute sooner. Becasue anything brought up in a civil trial could be used in a criminal trial later as one of our mGoLawyers correctly observed the other day.
