I would guess because OSU lost the championship game to the Gators in football and basketball in one game. I honestly believe we have no ammo against OSU because we haven't beaten them in 6 years.
That changes in 360 days...

What a horrible guess.

Stay classy.

For what it's worth, the part about the OSU streak ending in ~360 days was an excellent guess.
The pep band theory? Good guess. Exaggerated clapping being misconstrued as a Gator Chomp? A fine conjecture, I say!
But Gator Chomping against all opponents, OSU and non-OSU ones alike because we don't have any ammo against the Buckeyes? Still horrible.

Aaahhhhh. Now I get it. I thought it had to do with a game against OSU or maybe the FSU-OSU basketball game, although I wasn't really thinking about why would FSU fans want to be doing the Gator chomp. I didn't realize until now he was talking about hockey. My B.

Seems fine to me...it doesn't have to be a "Gator Chop" and I'm sure the pep band's been doing it for awhile (not sure on this though, so feel free to disprove that statement).
More worried about winning games than clapping styles.

I was just wondering. I'm sorry.
I figured something a little more lighthearted would be more welcome than the usual OMG WE LOST WE'RE TERRBLE WE NEED TO FIRE EVERYONE AND DISBAND EVERY SPORT!
And, yes, I am more worried about winning as well. i just wanted a 'history' lesson.

Nah, it's fine and I didn't mean to come across rudely, so don't worry about it.
I was surprised the first time I saw the chomp-clap too, but honestly it's not really specific to Florida. Every high school in my high school's conference did it and I've seen it at other games where teams aren't anything close to Gators.
Maybe if we make our hands into claws it can be more of a Wolverine bite.

we do it at hockey games too. don't think of it as a gator chomp...think of it as an exaggerated clap.
December 2nd, 2009 at 10:26 PM ^
This is done at every sport where the band shows up except for football. I've seen it at volleyball when they have a pep band. It's part of the build up for Let's Go Blue

Chant is "go to subway" because subway used to be a sponser. I imagine the gator chomp is supposed to simulate a mouth chomping on a tasty footlong. Sub, that is.

As a Tennessee fan as well, doing the gator chomp would hurt. Although, the Vols losing to Florida doesn't carry any of the terrible, gut-wrenching pain of an M loss to tOSU.
Completely OT - here is how we laugh at the gators, this woman is an alumna of UF. Speaks volumes for their emphasis on academics.

...isn't completely OT on this board; it is done a lot. The woman on the video was so bad that I could only watch 15 seconds before hitting the "back" button.
I hope you folks in Tennessee get a Florida version of the Redneck Rocker to laugh at someday. If Kiffin manages to beat Florida next year, maybe a Florida Redneck Rocker will ignore QB John Brantley's "double-legacy" status and make a nice video.
