First Michigan Game of the Fall - Women's Soccer

Submitted by South Bend Wolverine on

As of just a couple minutes ago, college sports season is officially underway again!  The Michigan women's soccer team kicks off the new sports year with an exhibition against WMU.  They will play another exhibition against Dayton on Friday, and then a week after that actual competitive action will begin against UW-Milwauke.  The summer has been long and painful, but it's finally coming to an end!

Score is nil-nil, about 10 minutes in.

The ladies are ranked #19 in the country while the men are receiving votes in their respective NSCAA Coaches Poll.

Wolverines Dominate, you're new here, so let me let you in on a secret.

There's tons of soccer fans on this site.  It's a great sport.  And this thread is about a Michigan team.

When the up/down votes return, bashing soccer (or any sport) is grounds for a neg-bomb.  And it's douchey.  So don't do it.

I saw that also and was confused because I am certainly not that person. I am also not new. My account says so, but I have been reading this blog for years, I just never made an account until recently.

It's Michigan Women's Varsity Soccer.  Female athletes who play for Michigan work just as hard and sacrifice just as much as male athletes do, and they do it to much less fanfare.  So do all athletes that play for Michigan in all other non-revenue varsity sports.  That kind of commitment deserves our respect and if your can't provide respect because you don't think women's sports count or non-revenue sports like soccer count, then just keep quiet.  The thread is clearly marked and is on topic.

Grow up.

I was in Michigan with my kids for our annual trip back to see family. My 10 year old daughters play Club soccer and are at that age where they are beginning to really look up to older kids/athletes. I arranged for our family to go watch the M women's soccer team practice. It was a very, very cool experience for us. We got to see some great skill and shooting, as well as goal keeping. We were just wanting to stay out of the way and not intrude, but when practice was over, the entire group (forwards/midfielders and GKs) started walking toward us. So they came and said Hello, visited for a few minutes and took a photo with my daughters. It made my kids day! Very nice kids, and gracious of them to interact with two young, impressionable girls. Super cool for mom too! classy group. The Michigan Difference!
