Finishing the recruiting class

Submitted by TK on December 10th, 2021 at 3:43 PM

Just a quick recap of where we are:

Scholarships: It appears we are planning on a lot of attrition as is normal these days. 79 players have eligibility left and we are looking at a class of 22-24 with a possibility of a transfer or 2 as well.

QB: We have one but 3* VaTech commit Alex Orji is visiting this weekend. Could this be a swap? I haven’t heard a lot of glowing reviews for Denegal and I wonder if we would take 2 given the number crunch.

RB: Probably not taking another recruit but ASU transfer DeaMonte Treyanum is visiting this weekend. Would be a good get.

WR: Need to add one more. 4* Clemons is visiting this weekend and we are still trying to flip ND recruit Amarion Walker.

TE: Set

OL: The addition of Gentry takes some pressure off. We will probably recruit 5* Connerly until February but he might stay out west. Virginia C Oluwatmi visiting this weekend. This would also be a huge get. Literally.

DT: We have 2 good ones but still pursuing Deone Walker. UM-UK battle.

DE: Top 100 player Derrick Moore visiting this weekend. If we don’t get him I still think we have a solid group, but there’s talk that Henry might not be solid.

LB: Set

CB/S: 4* Clemson decommit Keon Sabb still looking pretty good for Michigan. Might have to work to hang on to Kody Jones.

Hoping we can grab the 2 transfers, one of the WR and Sabb. Anyone else I have missed, fill me in.

On3 still has another 4-5 guys that both have offers and high interest in Michigan. I haven't heard of most of the names so could either be new info or out of date a bit. They still have some guys that decommitted  us so maybe it's the later.

Just to add to these

QB: Pretty sure they would take both as Harbaugh and Weiss went to see Denegal recently. Orji has some positional flexibility

WR: They'll take both Clemons and Walker if both want to come

OL: Conerly is a USC/Michigan/Washington battle. Helps that long time Oklahoma OL coach Bedenbaugh is staying at Oklahoma as Conerly was familiar with him. But he's deciding in February so long time to develop new relationships. Michigan pushing hard. Washington may be a factor if Morgan can work magic for them

CB/S: Tennessee insiders think that they are out for Kody Jones and Michigan is in strong position to keep him in the fold. Also Sabb could grow into a LB or Viper type role

ATH: Michigan is still in the mix for in state Keon Entringer. Likely position is safety but he can also play WR

Good info but at some point the scholarship crunch does become a real thing. I don’t know if I like taking two quarterbacks with our numbers as high as they already are. Yes I know there will be attrition, but we are already looking at having to have at least 10 players transfer, not including guys that are going to the NFL.

In my numbers, yes. There are 79 players who have eligibility left. 6 will probably move on to the NFL. Hutch, Ojabo, Hill, Haskins, Ross, Steuber. That would leave 73 and it looks like our class could be 25 or more including transfers. That would put us 13 over the limit, which would be a pretty high number of transfers. There could be quite a few players who don’t get offered the 5th/6th year but I don’t see a lot of those guys on the roster. Maybe a few.

Just wondering about your 79 # for players left with eligibility. Magnus on TTB has currently with 94 total scholarships allocated for 2022, counting the 21 players verbally committed. That would be 73 returners by his numbers. He doesnt list Hutch, Steuber or Ross, nor Jeter,  or Filiaga.

But yeah, like you said, with the class looking like it could be closer to 25, it looks like between NFL decisions (Hutch, Ojabo, Hill, Haskins, Steuber at least. Maybe not on Ross? who knows) and guys transferring or not getting their 5th year, there are likely around 15 guys who could play at UM next year who wont be back.

I don’t mean this as any slight to the recruit but  I don’t like Orji’s tape when it comes to him playing QB. If he is willing to play another position ala Michael Barrett then cool. When I watch his QB tape I see a lot of athleticism and a lot of floaty throws.

He also doesn’t throw the ball on time. The offense seems predicated on him making plays.

“He also doesn’t throw the ball on time. The offense seems predicated on him making plays.”

Agree. His footwork needs work. He’s not ready to deliver the ball at the top of his drop. Hitches at every drop back. That said, he’s not being brought in to play anytime soon and this is the type of prospect you bring in to the room.  He is a good athlete and built very solidly.
Good take in a 2 QB class in between a McCarthy and possibly Moore.

Sabb and one of the highly rated DL would bring joy to this star gazer.

Thinking Conerly or Walker would already be in if they were coming...adding one of them in addition to Sabb and a DL would be...I dunno, sort of appropriate to this season.
