Golson deserves a second chance.  Besides, if this happened in Columbus or EL, he never would have been kicked out of school, so ND is to be applauded here.

Well, Notre Dame's policy is for any student to take a suspension period of one year before reapplying, whether a football player or not. Golson took his punishment and went through the process like he should've. Most universities share this policy so I would assume other students would have the same admission rate.

I believe it is automatically a redshirt year.

You get 5 years to play 4 and your clock starts when you enroll in school. So he should still have 3 more years to play.

Kids take a a year off for various reasons all the time, a death in the family, personal injury or illness, focus on school, etc. You just don't hear about it in D1 football as much.

Heck, way back when, kids took off to go to war. You also hear about mission trips and things like that.

So, under "normal" circumstances, he SHOULD have his year, but maybe there is some rule that disqualifies him since he was kicked out of school.

EDIT: I assumed by the question that he was a true freshman. Since he was a RS Freshman, he would not get another year. He will be a RS Junior next year.

However, if he hadn't redshirted, I do believe that this would technically have been his redshirt year.

Here's how the NCAA handbook defines "prospective student athlete":

"A prospective student-athlete is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete if the institution provides such an individual (or the individual’s relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students generally."

It seems like many of the rules regarding how and when to contact and recruit do not come into play until much later in high school, so it is at least a little intriguing that you can be on the radar, as it were, even late in middle school potentially, if I read that second sentence right.

You should not be allowed to offer or commit before your junior year...period.

You can scout. You can show interest, you can send letters. But it shouldn't be on ESPN.com.

You shouldn't be able to have anything remotely official until you're enrolled as a HS Junior (or older).

But speaking as someone who has gone through the process: getting offers in, setting up relationships with coaches, and taking visits are all things you want to do as early in the process as possible, so why not? Especially if the coaches offer multiple people, then you want to pull the trigger. I wasnt recruited heavily until later in the cycle, but I sure as heck wish it had begun earlier.  Its never too early to start setting up those relationships with coaches.

And while I didn't get my first offer until the summer between my junior and senior year, I don't see the point in offering someone before their junior year.

And you can do all of that stuff you spoke of without an official offer.

Just means that your first day of your junior year you may have 10 offers rather than 1 your freshman year, 3 your sophomore year and 6 to start your junior year.

I'm not saying eliminate contact, I just don't think you should be able to offer anyone. It's a PR ploy and exposes the kid. It doesn't mean a damn thing when it all comes down to it.

I'm going to laugh my ass off when Michigan flips David Sills. Will show that early commitments mean nothing.

On a coincidental side note, Danny Clark was the one who beat out Michigan 2015 kicker commit Andrew David for the quarterback job at Massillon (OH) Washington this past season.
