ESPN GameDay Big Ten Preview

Rece Davis and Pete Thamel (two pundits I respect) discuss the conference and the upcoming season.  They start with Michigan, then Ohio State, and Penn State.  No paywall.  Thought I'd pass it along.

I'm not sure it's appreciated enough that Ohio State has strung together three insanely productive QB's and that drives a lot of the success they've had under Ryan Day. Really doubt they get that lucky with McCord or whomever ends up playing QB for them this year.

The suggestion that Ohio State "may be favored" if they played Michigan today is a crazy take.

They're still highly ranked QB with tremendous talent around them and a system that is QB-friendly.

Yes, on a long enough timeline they will bust at the position. Eventually they'll have a guy or guys that just stink but year to year it seems unlikely to me.

I'd sooner bet their starter throws for 35+ TDs than 15 with as many INTs. It could happen but just seems unlikely to the point that I wouldn't expect it.

I agree that the draw they have for receivers is so strong that it is fielding NFL grade talent and targeting  the open routes makes for greater QB stats. But it can also be said that the quality of the air game gets the QB draw as well.  I read the criticism of Mack Jones stats were amped because of the same reason and that the NFLs tight windows would reveal a lack at QB rating.  As a New England fan, I think that is playing out.  However, Mack has a nice arm and vision but his collegiate numbers are getting exposed.  The QB development by Day is enhanced for the same reasons IMO.  For this reason the great stat’s on the part of OSU QBs  don’t translate to the NFL

For real. They won a National Championship in a year where:

1. Their returning 4-year starter and Heisman candidate QB got knocked out for the season during fall camp.

2. Their RS Fr backup comes in and statistically is better than the 4 year starter.

3. That QB is out for the season during The Game.

4. Their 3rd string QB lights up Alabama in the semi’s and then outplays the Heisman trophy winner in the Championship Game.

2 years prior we had Russell Bellomy as our #2 QB.

A few notable.. what do you think of the projected win totals?  So, they shared their thoughts.

Michigan - 10.5 wins projected.. they took the over.

OSU - 10.5 wins projected.. they took the over.

the green and white in EL - 4.5 wins.. they took the under.

Considering that anything is possible in college football, all Michigan needs to do is TCOB until the OSU game and then prove the rest of the world that Michigan is, yet again, the better team on 11/25 when they curb stomp the Nuts into nut butter yet again.

OSU will be fine, again. If we were to win a NC and OSU sucked, then at 50 yrs old I’d be able to meet my maker and felt like my life was complete. Unfortunately those bastards will somehow come out demolishing teams and McCord will look like Brady all season.  Day can’t grow a full beard but can sure as hell develop a qb.
