The effect on UF's recruiting

Submitted by TomVH on
About mid way through the recruiting shenanigans, I wondered how our new pipeline of Florida would effect the University of Florida. I posted the question before, but now that we have actual numbers, we can look at it. This isn't to say that Michigan was the only contributer, because there were a lot of schools that got Florida recruits also. Anyway... This year Florida only had 16 total recruits. Granted they still have a lot of high end recruits, only 16 total. 9 of those kids are from Florida. This compares to the past like this. (I know, the argument can be made that they're returning their whole defense, blah, blah, but they also just won the national championship too) -2009 - 16 commits with 9 from Florida -2008 - 22 commits with 9 from Florida -2007 - 27 commits with 18 from Florida -2006 - 27 commits with 18 from Florida

How many high profile recruits did they lose yesterday? I know many thought Denard was in the bag and Nu’Keese Richardson went to Tenn. Did they lose anyone else yesterday?

To really see how it would affect them, you would have to look at which of our recruits were also offered by UF. Were any other than DRob offered? As for the 16 recruits, how many out of their 85 scholarships did they have available?

only have about 19 scholarships to give? 9 does seem low though. But like USC I've got to imagine that constantly stocking 4 and 5 star guys at every position is eventually force guys to look elsewhere first and upset the natural balance of at least a few of your recruiting classes. but none of that explains why it doesn't happen to Texas.

the kids have a more emotional connection to the program based on the fact that pretty much every kid there is from texas and was bred to be a longhorn from birth. just a wild guess that has no substance, but you never know.

Its funny this was posted because I was thinking the exact same thing during signing day. Michigans florida pipeline is growing rapidly especially when we get a God like recruit in Ricardo Miller who is gonna help us tremendously in recruiting players in florida. I know florida can still go out and grab the top recruits anywhere in the country but you've got to wonder if other teams dominance in florida recruiting is gonna possibly affect the Gators football program on the field.

It should be noted that while we got a number of Florida kids, we only got one Florida kid who was offered by one of the three major in-state programs (Florida, FSU, Miami) - that was Denard Robinson. So, the Florida kids we got were kids that were either going to the USF's of the world, or going out of state anyway.

say much of anything about the kids, it says a lot about the state. Even if the top 75 Florida kids went to the big three, we'd still be pulling 3 star talent. It sick how much talent Florida has. We have five 2-stars in our top 35 (and they're not kickers) http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?ra_key=2221&Year=2009 Florida's 35th best player is Frankie Telfort, who just signed with USC. http://flavarsity.rivals.com/content.asp?SID=957&CID=902729

hurt some of the other florida schools. FSU, Miami, USF (and apparently even UCF) suffered at our hands. I would think that UF will continue to be able to recruit most of the local players they want and will still be able to go outside the borders (Jenkins) for high caliber players. While Miami and FSU can still also do this to an extent, they carry less weight now.

I think the key point's been made here. Florida isn't at risk, not from us and whomever else you want to throw in. I'd be interested to see where similar players (by star/HS location) to the ones we're taking were going in previous years though. We're in the high 3/low 4 star area for the most part it seems, though Ricardo Miller is clearly a step up. In 2010 at least, I'd bet he's an outlier. We'll see if Rich can make it an upward trend.

Yea, if you notice though, the trend is moving up. We started off a little slower, but it's because they're building up new relationships, and maintaing ongoing relationships with coaches. It's now a different sell being at Michigan than WVU, obviously. As you mentioned, Ricardo is a step up, so I'm anxious to see how this keeps moving forward.

Players that we got that the Florida Gators offered: Anthony LaLota -- New Jersey -- 4 stars William Campbell -- Michigan -- 5 stars Tate Forcier -- California -- 4 stars Denard Robinson -- Florida -- 4 stars Je'Ron Stokes -- Pennsylvania -- 4 stars Players that Florida got, that UofM offered: Mike Gillislee -- Florida -- 4 stars Jelani Jenkiins -- Maryland -- 5 stars Kedric Johnson -- Florida -- 3 stars If you measure yourself against the best (Florida right now), we did fine in head to head recruiting. I believe that the above stats are all correct according to Rivals.
