Early 2009 thoughts

After Saturday's win Iv been hearing non-stop optimism around campus about the 2009 season, and maybe im a bit of a pessimist, but I think it is rather unfounded. First of all, I dont think that the Minn game is necessarily us turning the corner. I think we had a great game plan on both sides of the ball, plus Minn was a bit overrated. Although I would love to have somone explain to me y our defense was so effective against Minn, despite the fact that it has looked horrific against any decent oppenent this season. But anyway, were going to have either Threet, Sheridan, or a true freshman at QB during the 2009 season. Not to mention, an entirely new defensive line (cross your fingers Graham returns). Also were losing our best safety in Harrison, and Morgan Trent who in my opinion is way overrated, but a lot of people seem to like him. With all of that said, I definitely predict improvement, especially on the offensive side of the ball. We will have a more experienced starter, or a true freshman that fits better into our style of offense. In addition, we will have a more experienced offensive line, with possible changes at certain positions, as we might throw in one or more of the following current freshman: Barnum, Oneal, Koury, Mealer. (Cant say for sure with Zirbel. It would be great to have him, but its unclear whether hell ever play football again. At WR, we definitely won't be hurt by the returns of Terrence Robinson and Junior Hemingway. I dont think Matthews is a current NFL draft pick, so Id suspect hell return. Other than that, things will stay the same. More experience is always good. Odoms is looking solid. No tremendous WR recruits in the 2009 class (losing Bryce Mcneal was a definite blow), so expect it to stay relatively the same until 2010 wen Ricardo Miller and Jeremy Jackson arrive. At RB, Minor has really established himself as the starter. There are several forums devoted to his recent brilliance so I wont get to far into that. Im still curious as to what will be done with McGuffie next yr. Notice that Shaw got a bunch of carries on Saturday. I personally would like to see McGuffie redshirt so that he can pack on a few lbs (a few being 20-25). He also has some work to do with his technique: running lower and behind his pads. Or possibly expect to see him a lot more in the slot, where he has been relatively effective, despite looking hilariously akward on his long catch in Minn. I dont expect Toussaint or any of the other freshman to contribute here. But based on how the defense has played, I am somewhat sceptical of our chances of improving greatly. Despite having 3 seniors and a beat of a junior defensive line, we have managed to look absolutely terrible against mediocre oppenents such as Purdue. As I expect, based on his incredible numbers this year, that Graham will be headed to the NFL. Of course we will cross our fingers to the contrary, but lets analyze based on worst case scenario that we lose our entire defensive line. Martin will be definite starter at DT. He has looked very solid this year. Sagesse has been the backup to Will Johnson this year so he is the current favorite. Hopefully Campbell will recommit, and establish himself as a capable true freshman starter. Our current backups at DE are Van Bergen, Adam Patterson, and Greg Banks. The latter two havent seen much time, if any. We also have the two DE recruits (Lalota and Roh). Both in my opinion would benefit greatly from a year to redshirt. Roh is far to small to play at this level, as he is only 230 lbs. Lalota is far more physically imposing, but he is new to football and needs work on his technique. Im hoping that the current backups can prove themselves enough to hold down the DE spots until 2010, and allow the incoming recruits to redshirt and develope. Michigan's 2008 linebacker core has been the worst of recent years. Expect Ezeh and Mouton to return as starters, with Fitzgerald or Demens filling in the hole left by Thompson. We might miss Witherspoon and Hill. But the fact that Fitzgerald and Demens have both not played a snap at LB this year makes me somewhat uneasy about the liklihood that the 2009 linebackers will bring the consistency that we need. Also the losses of Harrison and Stewart (im not particular sad about this one) gives way to either Mike Williams, Brandon Smith, or Isaiah Bell, the latter two of whom havent played a snap at safety for Michigan. Stevie Brown will be a near certain starter. You can have your own opinions on this truth. Cissoko has played ok/good in his time over the past few weeks, especially considering his lack of experience. Plus Justin Turner will be coming in and might contribute, so I dont feel that were giving much up hear. But nevertheless, I dont see much reason to predict improvement in a defensive backfield that has allowed the most passing yards in the Big10. As I said, I think that the offense will certainly improve, as the only current Sr on that side of the ball is Massey, whos been demoted to backup TE. (I thought Moosman was a Sr but the Depth Chart has him as a Jr.) And I don't expect any of the current juniors (Matthews, Minor, McAvoy, Moosman, Ortman) to be heading to the NFL quite yet. The defense on the other hand, has been extremely disappointing this year, and the unit is losing 7 current starters (the Dline, Harrison, Trent, Thompson). The LB's could improve being that Thompson was pretty bad, and Ezeh and Mouton hopefully will benefit from more experience. The DB's still will have relatively skilled personelle, but they need to tighten coverage at the corners, and be far smarter and more consistent at the safety positions. Dont expect much from the DLine, althou our line this year, which should have been our strength, was relatively neutralized by opponents smart gameplanning and quick passing.

Don't forget about Carson Butler playing DE now. He could very realistically be the starter opposite Van Bergen, with Patterson and Banks as the back-ups, giving the 2 frosh guys time to add weight and mature. A big problem our defense had this year is that they were on the field so much. With our 2009 offense being much improved over this year, it will give the defense much more rest, and should improve their performance.

This year was the perfect storm (in a truly bad way). The optimism is partially because with a couple of breaks, M could have easily won 6 games this year. It appears the non-conference will result in at least 3 probably 4 wins next year. Barwis had a great piece about the players actually getting stronger as the year goes on because of their conditioning. They will start in much better condition next year. I can't imagine M not winning at least 7 games next year and think 8 or more is very realistic.

That was a well thought out write up, thanks. I have little doubt with about 12 guys competing for 8 spots on the O Line they will be better for the competition. I would imagine with 4 qb's going at it they will get one guys who stands out. I dont think offensively you can discount how experience will help, look at Sheridan, is there any doubt as the season has gone on that he has figured things out a little more? Well see Saturday but he was highly competent last week, and he has no talent. I would expect Forcier or Beaver to really excel compared to other freshmen with spring ball and 5 extra months with Barwis. Defensively is the mystery, I am watching the next two weeks to see if something might not have clicked with the staff and the players. We know its not talent on that side of the ball.

I am looking at it this way. Imagine Threet/Sheridan at this point in the season with Feagin's speed. That is what I expect out of the freshmen next year. The rest of our offense should be much improved. I am counting on Graham staying and Campbell signing with us. In which case, we are looking at a Graham, Martin, Campbell, Van Bergen line at worst. The linebackers will hopefully improve. Warren and Cissoko should be more than competent. And our safeties will hopefully improve as some of our redshirted players get play time. We lost a lot of close games this year and we will start out with 3 easy OOC games, ND, Indiana, and MSU sic Ringer. I see 6-0 starting out and hopefully that will be enough experience for both sides the ball to hold at least .500 in the latter half of the season.

Youre right I did forget about butler. Hes definitely a good athlete, so hopefully he can turn into a legit D1 defensive end. Theres also talk about Helmuth move to defensive end, so well see what happens ther. I hope that ur right in that the defense will improve with a better offense and more rest. And Im suprisingly optimistic about the Oline. I like the depth, even tho we dont have any Longs or Krauss quite yet. But I think we def saw some improvement in the past few games. Both Minor and Feagins broke off long runs because of huge holes created by the Oline. I dont think the line will be spectacular, but hopefully they can be at least reasonable.

Joeyb i think ur being a bit optmistic in several regards. I have read the speculation as to Grahams return, but i just dont see it. He put up serious numbers this years, and next yr he wood be facing non-stop double teams, so his numbers would likely suffer. But anyway, even if Graham is returning, that doesnt make our Dline better than this yr. It just means that were losing less. And if weve learned anything from the 2007/2008 seasons, its that no games are guaranteed. Not MAC games, not D1 AA, not OOC, and certainly not games against ND, Mich State, or any other big10 opponent. As for the freshman, Forcier has a great arm in terms of accuracy and is far more mobile than threet and sheridan, but he doesnt have the speed of Feagins. Beaver might have that type of speed, but he doesnt have a tremendous arm. Plus the fact that both are as inexperienced as Threet and Sheridan were coming into the season. Lets be realistic for now so we dont all end up getting our hearts broken again. 6-0 to start the season is certainly possible, but stating it as a liklihood is a bit strong.

BG himself has hinted several times at wanting to come back next year. i don't see how it would hurt his stock. The overall team would be much better and as for getting double-teamed, I would think that it would just make him look more dominant since they can't go one-on-one with him.

As a rule, you'll never, ever hear an athlete say during the season that he's going to go pro. They always say they're expecting to return. But then the season ends, they start hearing about their draft stock, and a lot of them leave. I hope BG stays, but I doubt it'll happen.

yeah i agree with that to an extent. but last year mario was going around campus saying how it was his 'money year'. i haven't heard those same type of comments from BG and from everything i've heard, either through the media or guys on the team is that him coming back next year is a very likely possibility. i ain't worried bout it.

I am being optimistic about the first 6 games because we only lost to ND because we turned the ball over 6 times. Take away the 21 points that we spotted them and give us the points from the fumble and interception in the red zone and we dominate them like they dominated us. If we play this season again with the starters and experience that we have now, I think we beat Utah, ND, and Toledo, which puts us at 6-4. I know the games aren't gimmes but if they schedule the games right I think we win our first 6. I didn't mean to imply that I think our DLine gets better next year, but I did mean to say that I think it will hold its weight. I think the linebackers will be improved, the Corners will be around the same as this year, and with redshirted freshmen contending for the starting safety positions, I think we might be able to play with 11 men on the field. If our defense still sucks next year, I think it will be because we give up 5 yards every play instead of lots of yards for a touchdown. And yes, I am being optimistic, but that was the point of the post. We could just as easily go 2-4 by midseason again, but I don't think that will happen.

"A big problem our defense had this year is that they were on the field so much. With our 2009 offense being much improved over this year, it will give the defense much more rest, and should improve their performance." I don't get this argument. Yes, our defense has been on the field a lot this season. But that is primarily due to the fact that, with the exception of Minnesota, our defense has done a horrible job on third down this season. When your D can't get off the field on third downs then yes, it will be on the field a long time. Anyway, people blaming the offense for the defense's struggles have to realize it goes both ways. Our defense has regularly failed to give the ball back to our offense in good position. We've started many, many drives this season inside our own 20. If our defense could have stepped up and gotten more turnovers and 3 and outs, it would helped our offense out a lot.

Of course it goes both ways; I don't think anyone would disagree with that. But there is certainly a difference between an offense that regularly moves the ball and gives the other team the ball via kickoff or a punt deep in their own territory than an offense goes three-and-out and gives the D little rest or that turns the ball over giving them good field position. Our O has done both, often. You're correct in that it is the defense's fault if they can't get themselves off the field, but it is up to the offense to allow the D time to rest in between said possessions. Don't tell me a defense won't perform better with 6 minutes between possessions rather than 2. This also limits the number of possessions the defense is on the field.

I really think that argument is overblown. Our guys work their butts off 12 months a year to stay in shape for football season, and this year they all said that Barwis got them into their best shape ever. And even if the offense hasn't been great, we've consistently punted well, putting opposing offenses in poor field position. The fact is, we've been horrid at getting 3rd-down stops all year, regardless of the time of the game or the success of our offense. It's not like our 3rd-down defense is great in the first quarter and then gradually gets worse. Against Toledo, we gave up a 50-yard drive right off the bat. Against MSU, we gave up a 3rd and 16 to start the game, followed by a 3rd and 5 that turned into a 60-yard TD. Against Purdue, the offense and special teams got us a 14-0 lead and the D promptly coughed it right up. We flat-out haven't been a good defensive team. There is no way to explain it away.
