Well, it doesn't say it *all*: The rest of the team tested negative, which is good news.
March 12th, 2020 at 11:51 AM ^
Yeah except for Rudy Gobert.

AKA Player Patient Zero

Do we know this for sure? Did they test all players?
He was the one touching everything in the locker room
March 12th, 2020 at 12:05 PM ^
Yeah, that's actually somewhat encouraging. These guys spend so much time together in the locker room, on the bench, on the plane (not to mention sharing basketballs during warmups)- and still, most avoided infection. Perhaps it's not quite as transmittable as feared. Let's all make sure we keep following those hygienic procedures.
I think some of the research is showing that transmission rates (as well as fatality rates) are dependent on age and health. So it is probable that a group of athletes is less likely to spread the disease and less likely to have significant symptoms. That is the good news. The bad news is it takes time to detect and test. And these guys only got tested because they are rich and famous. There could be 2 positive tests on a D2 basketball team and we would likely never know. That spread to more vulnerable persons is what is going to cause the worst consequences.

I was all ready to say "Wrong Player Dummy!!" but I looked it up and apparently there's 2 Jazz players with CoronaVirus (Rudy Gobert also reportedly tested positive).
This is craziness.
March 12th, 2020 at 11:23 AM ^
Not really that crazy. We are pretty much all going to get it. Trick is staying away from people who it's actually bad for so they don't get it. Also, buy Gilead stock.
March 12th, 2020 at 12:03 PM ^
In addition to the above, the trick is to slow down the spread so the health systems can handle the cases that require assistance. If you can spread it out over weeks/months, then it's a whole hell of a different story that it sweeping through and affecting everyone at once.
March 12th, 2020 at 12:09 PM ^
my money is on moderna.
March 12th, 2020 at 11:24 AM ^
For some reason, I can't embed the below as it's saying that I'm banned in doing so, anyways:
Jazz star Donovan Mitchell has tested positive for the coronavirus, league sources tell ESPN. Jazz players privately say that Rudy Gobert had been careless in the locker room touching other players and their belongings. Now a Jazz teammate has tested positive."
Completely a reckless and selfish move by Rudy Gobert. Granted he didn't know he was infected and would test positive but he was joking around for days about this shit and this is what his blasé attitude about it has produced.
March 12th, 2020 at 11:31 AM ^
Mr. League Sources at the Jazz should maybe talk to legal about HIPAA.
March 12th, 2020 at 11:39 AM ^
No kidding man. If people don’t get control of this narrative people who have the slightest cough or illness are going to be ostracized and discriminated against like they have done something wrong. Here you already have one person being targeted for scorn because he “touched things.” This is getting crazy.
March 12th, 2020 at 11:51 AM ^
He mocked precautionary steps taken to mitigate the situation. Different than someone who just 'touched things'.
March 12th, 2020 at 11:59 AM ^
he didn't just "touch things," and you know it.
March 12th, 2020 at 12:01 PM ^
It's not because he "touched things". That's revisionist at best. Gobert is the poster child for exactly how not to act regarding Covid-19, or any other international public health concern for that matter. His actions were intentional, as reported by his own teammates.
March 12th, 2020 at 12:02 PM ^
This thing is really letting the crazy people show themselves, so that's kinda good I suppose.
Can't believe how many insane opinions you have about things.
March 12th, 2020 at 12:17 PM ^
In this case he did do something wrong. He purposely 'contaminated' things out of ignorance, the fact that he didn't know he was contaminating things doesn't give him a pass. Your inability to admit you're wrong doesn't actually change reality.
March 12th, 2020 at 12:32 PM ^
Feel free to keep your thoughts to yourself at any time.
Ijohnb has got to be trolling at this point. What Gobert did was at best reckless and stupid, and at worst malicious. If one of the reporters gets it who’s mic he touched they should sue him personally, the jazz, and the NBA.
March 12th, 2020 at 11:47 AM ^
Reckless and stupid, yes, but also it's not likely that it would have made a difference. This thing is infecting more and more no matter what we do. Washing with soap and disinfecting is good advice in general and on a large scale will help to slow the spread, but on an individual basis, whether he touched a guy's bag or not is highly unlikely to have made the difference. They are professional athletes spending hours a day in close proximity, wearing nothing but shorts and tank tops - once one guy has it it was bound to go to someone else.
There is no need to overreact. There is a difference between taking prudent society-wide steps to slow and contain the spread vs overreacting to each individual case and speaking like it's the end of the world.
March 12th, 2020 at 12:03 PM ^
Um, yes it very well could have made a difference. He was already sick and made it far more likely that he passed it on to his teammates.
He's a moron, but a huge percentage of humans are morons, so............
March 12th, 2020 at 12:07 PM ^
I agree that his transgression is not the end of the world, but his cavalier attitude toward public health should absolutely be highlighted and addressed as the wrong way to act. It would be even better if he could learn from this and act as a proponent for responsible personal hygiene and disease prevention.
March 12th, 2020 at 12:16 PM ^
If not for dude having Coronavirus, his teammates would beat his behind.
March 12th, 2020 at 11:59 AM ^
Clearly SVG is the cause of this. If he took Donovan Mitchell over Kennard then the man would be absolutely fine. Stan Van Gundy, patient zero!
The majority of transmissions with this virus are airborne. You have 10 times more active virus in your mouth and are contagious immediately although most wont be “sick” for 2-3 days.
Normal breathing is was is the most common transmission of this disease.
