do we still have room for parker and/or knight

Submitted by ish on
with the commitment of davion rogers, we have 25 commits. RR says we can take 26. http://www.detnews.com/article/20100117/SPORTS0201/1170330/1462/sports/…. jake ryan is expected to commit. drake isn't expected to make it. that leaves one spot. there are still a number of recruits on the board apart from knight and parker, including earnest thomas who appear to want to commit. can we take knight and/or parker? will someone get barnsed?

I think there is the possibilities of gray shirting a couple guys in this class if need be. If top recruits want to come here, there are ways of making sure there is room for them.

Room will be made for top-flight recruits like Parker, Dorsey, etc. I would prefer Grimes over some of the guys we have, but his commitment wouldn't make or break this recruiting class. WOTS is that the coaches think the 2011 class will be a strong one for offensive linemen, and they're slightly concerned about Wilson's knee injury, so the coaches might have cooled on him a little bit.

I'm sure that if parker and/or knight want to come to UM, RR will find a way. Courtney Avery might become the newest recruit for the women's BB team (ala Ladybugs), but RR will find a way.

He's from St. Ignatius, in Ohio. His teammate is Scott McVey, who's committed to OSU. He flew under the radar, has some MAC offers. The feeling on him is he's another guy that a lot of people missed on, he grew quite a bit, and had a good senior season.

I hear Avery is very good corner. I think that Vinopal has to be the logical choice for odd man out if anyone is. Quite possibly our lowest rated recruit. Rather short (5'10"), light in weight and stiff for a safety. I think Vinopal has to be a prime candidate for a grey shirt.

Those are all the stereotypes used against him in the beginning. He is determined to prove his doubters wrong. Personally, I like a guy who will give his all day in and day out. By the way, 5'10 is not short compared to recruits we've landed in the last couple of years.

Vinopal is our lowest rated recruit on Rivals. Avery is a 3 star. Vinopal is short, stiff and light in weight. He has offers from the those super powers of football.... Kent State and Bowling Green. That's it! Avery was committed to Stanford of the Pac 10. Are you idiot enough to tell me that Avery should be grey shirted in favor of Vinopal?

Hm.. I seem to recall reading in another thread that Vinopal was closer to 5'11.. and from watching his highlight tape (which of course are his best plays so I took that into consideration) Vinopal plays with decent hip action, looks like he has excellent vision and has no problem hitting someone in the mouth. And last I checked, high profile offers does not make a good ball player. Seems to me that Avery is exceptionally tiny, and what we need is someone who makes a WR catching a slant or a cross that they might not remember the next 40 minutes or so tomorrow.

there is still room for one of them, but I'm not sure if they would want both at this point. If they have the room then pick them both up, but if not I would like to see Parker over Knight.

No need to go back and forth about this. I personally like Avery as a commit. And I think Vinopal is a player that can possibly be developed.... so I am not all down on him. I just think he is more of a project. I just happen to think Avery is clearly the better prospect.... he has both Big 10 and Pac 10 offers.... and clearly impressed the coaches at camp. Vinopal only has offers from Kent State and Bowling Green. But he could be a sleeper. Reasonable minds can differ. Moreover, Vinopal has those short, stubby legs. So it is his frame as much as his lack of height that will pose a problem for him. I just don't see Vinopal being anything more than a situational role player for us throughout his entire career here. And apparently Rivals feels the same way.

Jake Ryan looks like he knows how to tackle and has the speed to get there. Pretty sure we need him in Blue. Hopefully he'll be good and pissed off that he didn't get more respect from recruiters...somethin' to prove.

I'm pretty sure if they want to make room they can. It comes down to how many 5th years they bring back. The problem is it limits them next season. It looks like, with a 25 player class, they will have around 15 spots next season. If we take 27 this season that leaves on 13 for the next. Those numbers aren't exact since we will have to consider how many of next year's 5th years will be invited back (I doubt Watson will get a 5th year) and any unexpected attrition. You must assume that if the staff takes someone this season, he must be good enough to limit next years class.
