Did Braxton Miller (remember him?) Commit A NCAA Violation Last Night?

Submitted by mGrowOld on

Saw this on a tweet just now from a local (Cleveland based) sports media guy I follow Kenny Rhoda.  Seems that Braxton posted a picture of himself last night on Instagram alongside a Columbus-based nutrional supplement distributor behind a row of his products and included a link to Miller's website for ordering.  The post was quickly deleted.

I know nothing of this website that broke the story nor do I think the NCAA will give two shits about it but I thought it was interesting.

It's funny that earlier this morning, Sam and Ira were laughing about how OSU basically brags that they report the most secondary violations of any school and laugh about it themselves. Kewl

violation. The NCAA expects schools to self-report everything. I think that's typically the case too. There's no downside for issues where there's no real punishment attached. For major violations, they're hoping it will make the NCAA more lenient. It doesn't keep schools from appealing the penalties, like Syracuse is doing now.

So the Monday after the Sandusky story broke, I joked with one of my Buckeye colleagues "you know, this would be a pretty good time for Gene Smith to self-report a bunch of violations."

Fast forward 3 days, and Ohio State DID do exactly that!!!  November 10, 2011, literally the day after Paterno's firing, when nobody was paying attention.

Excellent job Gene Smith.

Hahaha this is great..osu is saying to ncaa..what you gona do foo? Its like the players know that schools like osu will not get punished anyway so might as well just do things in the open instead of hiding it.

You know some rules have been broken for none of the three QB's to even consider transferring. Can't say I didn't expect this bc we're talking about osu here.

I don't disagree with you, but being a strong candidate to repeat as a National Championship, with a shot at being the QB of that team, and the fact that Meyer is a great coach (despite what we think of him personally), I imagine there's more to it than the possibility of rules being broken.  Punish in-house and all....  /s

BUT, that said...if it turns out that is indeed the case, I won't be one bit surprised.

If the three are all healthy, they are all capable and each will have supporters inside and outside the program.  Any QB controversy can't be good for the team.  My prediction is that unless Braxton is the clear starter he will be gone, and they revert to where they were last year-Barrett #1 and Jones #2.  Of course best case is that everyone comes back healthy and it is a year long distraction for OSU.

but can't he just say he's a salesman or part owner of the Co?  Can't imagine the NCAA can stop a kid from working.  Saying he's using his celebrity is subjective.

Who cares? OSU is nothing but NCAA violations, and there is absolutely no interest in policing them. Because they have such a favorable local media scene (i.e. the guy who sat on the scoop of Drayton leaving for days because he didn't want it to affect Weber) they can get away with whatever they want.

That's how it is, was and always will be, so let's just go out there and beat them next Thanksgiving weekend.

It's interesting how many of the scandals have been uncovered in areas where there are rival programs. USC, Michigan, SMU, UNC, Miami, are all programs that have a lot of nearby competition. You are probably correct in assuming that there is some level of causation between local media scrutiny and NCAA investigations.

This is cool and all that it's happening to OSU, but to be perfectly honest, all I can think about is that I'm kind of annoyed that THIS is an NCAA violation.

He might have and OSU would do well to follow the rules, but I believe that college athletes should (at least) be allowed to do ads for local companies that fall within a certain radius of the school or their hometown. It allows them to make some money off their own brand instead of others making money off of them and they can lend their name to support businesses. Win-win.
