Detroit News Lists Their Top 10 In-State HS Basketball Players
Carlton Brundidge checks in at #8.
Carlton Brundidge, Southfield, 6-0, sr.: A point guard who can score, Brundidge put up 44 in a game last season. He led Southfield to the Class A semifinals by averaging 24.5 points and he made 80 percent of his free throws. "It's his maturity that sets him apart," coach Gary Teasley said. Brundidge signed with Michigan.

As you can see, Amir Williams is #1...sigh.
And very senior dominated, as would be expected, but usually the State has a couple of really highly regarded juniors who are up there. It doesn't seem to be the case this year.

Amir Williams goes to school with me (at Detroit Country Day)
and I can tell you, he's been facing a lot of adversity regarding his decision, I'm not sure if a decommit is possible, but it really seems like Ohio St. was his parents school of choice.
he's still definitely considering UM, but i'm not sure where they stand now that he's a verbal to OSU
December 6th, 2010 at 2:02 PM ^
he never seriously considered Michigan and he always has been a long, long shot.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:41 PM ^
I hear he needs braces.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:02 PM ^
We got this.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:05 PM ^
His parents school of chioce eh? Maybe his parents got paid, but, you know, as long as Amir doesn't know that's all well and good.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:24 PM ^
Williams signed an LOI, so there's no way he can decommit from OSU.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:32 PM ^
i was under the impression that he was still a verbal.. = My bad,
sorry guys.

This is from a Nov. 18 item posted in a Buckeyes blog:
Thad Matta, head coach of the fourth-ranked Ohio State men’s basketball team, added a fifth member to the 2011 class of recruits with the submission of an NCAA National Letter of Intent Wednesday by Amir Williams, a 6-foot-10 inch, 220-pound center from Birmingham, Mich.

Amir Williams has done nothing to warrant #1 spot. If he's that good, several top schools would have been after him, but they didn't.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:05 PM ^
Regardless of how we view the OSU basketball program and the way they do business, I think it's time that most people accept the fact that OSU has become a basketball "top school".
December 6th, 2010 at 2:12 PM ^
In the National Championship Game just 3 years ago, and are currently #2...I'd say yes.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:06 PM ^
OSU and Florida aren't good enough programs for you?
And it's not the Top Ten players in the Country....Top Ten in the State. If he's so undeserving, who would you rank as the top player in Michigan?
December 6th, 2010 at 2:12 PM ^
but to claim that big time schools went after him is absurd. Sure OSU and Florida are good basketball programs but there are other top programs like Duke, Kansas didn't go after them despite Amir's claiming that he has an offer from them.
I've seen Amir Williams play and he does not play like the best player in the state of Michigan. I've seen better HS basketball players like Carlton Brundidge, Tommy McCune, Jalen Reynolds, Dwaun Anderson, and to name a few. Their rankings are based on college potential moreso than high school production.
Amir would score 20 points in one game and then score like 5 points in the next game. He struggled against smaller players guarding him which doesn't scream #1 player in teh state of Michigan to me.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:08 PM ^
Duke and Florida were after him as well.. I think it's size issues, I mean 6'9 220 is pretty average for a center these days
December 6th, 2010 at 4:04 PM ^
no way is 6'9" avg for a center in high school; especially among country day competition.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:04 PM ^
excuse me for the ignorance...why does basketball recruiting have players sign before their senior season? Seems backwards. Are there separate signing dates? Do only the elite/ top 150 usually sign before their season? Anyone who can shine some light would be appreciated.
/doesn't follow basketball recruiting at all.

You can commit anytime. Heck, headline grabbing coaches have gotten them from pre-high school kids. And Junior commits happen in football too. We've had some. They're just no more or less binding till signing day than senior commitments.
(hoping that came off without snark)
December 6th, 2010 at 2:12 PM ^
No, that makes sense. It does seem striking that so many of the top players in the state are committed early but the wording in the article (saying all of them "signed with x") confused me. Thanks +1 to you.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:14 PM ^
They normally use "signed with" for players that have signed. But didn't really change any designation for those who aren't actually, you know, SIGNED.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:32 PM ^
I'm not so sure the writer go anything wrong. He used "signed with" for the seniors, all of whom signed LOIs during the early signing period in November. He used "committed to" for the juniors, such as Matt Costello, who made a verbal commitment to MSU but can't sign an LOI until Nov. 2011.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:17 PM ^
For Basketball, there is an early signing period. Carlton and Trey have signed with Michigan, and if you follow the coaches' twitter feeds, you'll realize they have been mentioning them, by name, which you can't due until they are signed.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:24 PM ^
Thus the "only seniors" part. There are the two signing days for basketball, but those are just for seniors.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:32 PM ^
Is Bo Ziegler Trey's younger brother?
December 6th, 2010 at 2:46 PM ^
Ernie Zeigler's CMU bio says he has only two children: Trey and a daughter, Skylar. Don't know if Bo is related to them in some other way.
December 6th, 2010 at 3:48 PM ^
and a daughter, Skylar
Daughter? Skylar?
December 6th, 2010 at 4:06 PM ^
See the following from a CMU newspaper:
The Zeigler family is a tight-knit group, according to those who know them well. Zeigler’s wife, Seantelle, and daughter, Skylar, who enters high school next year, attend as many of Ernie’s and Trey’s games as possible. His grandmother resides in the Mount Pleasant area as well.
As an aside, it seems like it would've been quite a surprise if Trey hadn't chosen CMU.

Next to the PSL i think the Catholic League is definetly back in basketball and is the 2nd best league in Michigan. DeLa Salle has the potential to win a state championship while U of D will have the most talented team with Fowler and Jenkins. I still think CC will be the sleeper, they're young and very talented, Kyle Cooper would be a dream in Michigan's offense, he's like Smotrycz 2.0 and is very underrated. If you have a chance to watch CC or U of D this year, there is easily 3 potential M targets as juniors.
