Dave Revsine's Inside The Numbers: Week 9
The weekly article from Dave Revsine of the Big Ten Network on applicable stats for the games this week. I'll do a quick overview of what was said about Michigan and this weeks opponent, Penn State. I'll provide the link at the bottom for those of you who want to see what was said about the other Big Ten teams.
- The Wolverines are one of two teams averaging more than 225 yards passing and 225 yards rushing this year. The other? #2 ranked Oregon.
- Why is Michigan not in the top 5? Defense obviously. Wolverines allowed 33+ points in each of last 3 games.Third time this has happened under Rodriguez. Before Rich Rod arrived, this never happened before in the history of Michigan football, dating back to 1879.
- Last two games, the Penn State defense has allowed 437 yards vs Illinois and 433 vs Minnesota, the 8th and 10th ranked offenses in the Big Ten. These are the two highest yardage totals Penn State has allowed since 2005
On another note, I will be traveling to Happy Valley this weekend for the game. I wish safe travels and good times for all of those who will be joining me to cheer on Michigan as they get their season back on track. Go Blue!

Penn State's offense vs Michigan's defense might actually be close to a draw. That says a lot--about how much Penn State struggles on offense.

Indiana scored 35 and you can't even put Penn States passing O in the same discussion as Indiana.
And our rush defense isn't that terrible, specially now that demens looked promising in place of ezeh.
Only way PSU scores more than 21-24 pts is if we turn the ball over multiple times

I'll admit that I don't really know much about PSU offense but from what I have heard and read, their passing game is atrocious. As bad as the Michigan defense has been I still think we hold an edge(very slight) on the defensive side of the ball especially if Martin is back to 100%. It will be interesting to see how Demens does though.
I say M-49 PSU-21

These numbers combined with the bye week are the makings for a big game for Denard. Another 200/200 is just what the doctor ordered.

Why not just go 250/250?
October 27th, 2010 at 9:36 PM ^
first ever 300/300?
October 27th, 2010 at 10:44 PM ^
I'm in. 3 long TD runs = 220ish, other 80+ on 7-15 yd runs.
A couple of 70 yard-ish screens that become TDs = 140, another 100 in conventional football, one deep strike for 70ish.
And late 3rd quarter Tate comes in to go 200/100.
Michigan 54 PSU 28.

Can you imagine how sick that would be? A 300-300 Denard game? When I go to bed at night, I fantasize about such a day, only in my fantasies, it occurs, rather improbably, against OSU. Some people have imaginary friends. I have imaginary Michigan victories. The difference is most people give up their imaginary friends when they hit adolescence. I'm nearly 30. A man can dream, right?

You're still allowed to have imaginary things, since you're not even a man according to Mike Gundy:

Never settle for #2.

The spread is dead, Gary Danielson? Ah yes. Rich Rodriguez and his protegé, best offenses in the country.
October 27th, 2010 at 9:07 PM ^
It's not that it's dead, it just doesn't work in a real aq conference.

Spread is dead - Danielson (shoulder shrug, shakes head and Sigh)
The same Danielson that compared Florida and M in 06 and said the 20 point win over Vandy M had was the same as the squeker win UF had over the same team.
Was he brainwashed by the SEC?
He is a PU guy.

CBS's paychecks will probably do a pretty solid job brainwashing him.

Enjoyed your "Executive Summary". Well done and thanks.

Must be an odd attempt at humor, because it did not actually happen in 1879.
FWIW, we gave up 31+ points in three consecutive games in 1999, and gave up 32+ points in four consecutive games in 2006-2007 (OSU, USC, App St, Oregon).
October 27th, 2010 at 9:19 PM ^
how michigan football began in 1879, i think the OP was referencing that it never happened before.
October 27th, 2010 at 9:20 PM ^
You state the obvious quite well.
October 27th, 2010 at 9:19 PM ^
I will fix it. It was meant to say the team has never given up 33+ in the history of the program dating back to 1879. Thank you for pointing out the error.
October 28th, 2010 at 11:08 AM ^
Thanks, jmblue, for pointing out that we gave up 32+ points in four consecutive games in recent history. I really hate the bending of statistics to make up never-seen-in-131-years-of-Michigan-football RR "failures." It is getting quite old.
October 28th, 2010 at 12:01 PM ^
If the big difference is that it was 32 pts in 4 straight, instead of 33 in 3 straight.... pretty lame stat for sure.
the one that has me very concerned, is that it's happend on three seperate occassions under Rich. There is no doubt that we are giving up a distrurbing number of yards and pts over the course of the last 3 years, with this season, the 3rd sesaon, being the worst yet.
