The D Line really misses Bryan Mone (videos of him)
After watching the D Line get pushed the last 3 weeks, it shows a huge contrast of how good Bryan Mone (6'3", 344) was at not getting pushed. It did happened. But it was rare, and only in small distances. I watched a few videos of him after work today. He nearly always got push, even on some double teams. There is no one like this on the D Line this year. I don't see why Mazi Smith can't be put in more often. He lacks experience? Sure. But it would seem better to see him in the middle of the line than Jordan Glasgow..... But I'm not a coach.
Looking back, what we had in Bryan Mone!
Here's some Bryan Mone videos.
Ohio State 2016
Michigan State 2017
Ohio State 2017
Notre Dame 2018
Chuck Filiaga (6'6", 342) isn't playing a lot on the O Line. I'm wondering if he should be tried at the interior of the D Line.

He is obviously missed but i always thought he would be a lot better than he was. Also it seemed like he gained tons of weight each year.

My biggest take away from that video was how much we miss Mo Hurst.

All weight gain is good! All weight loss is good! Need you be reminded?

Paea.

What's the deal with him? Is he injured?
September 24th, 2019 at 10:43 AM ^
Not sure, I've nicknamed him "the 300 lb. DT in the room that nobody wants to talk about".

No offense, but I always think it’s funny when people assume OL will make good DTs just because they are big. I’m sure our DTs we have are better options.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:42 PM ^
I didn't say he would make a good defensive lineman. Did you read that?
I said maybe he should be tried.
September 23rd, 2019 at 11:12 PM ^
If he’s not going to be good, why try him?

Really?

move onwenu to DT (in the middle of his senior year). put in milton. its hilarious
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:58 PM ^
Surprised we haven't seen calls for Milton at DT.
September 23rd, 2019 at 11:31 PM ^
??? I've suggested it at least a dozen times!
Especially against Rutgers last year
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:28 PM ^
Moving Onwenu to NT is not an absurd suggestion.
Suggesting that we are going to fix the current DL issues by practicing harder might be.

Serious question - who do YOU think would do better, a converted formerly 240 FB or a mediocre interior OL guy?
I think the latter, by far.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:58 PM ^
The problem is that decision should have been made 6 months ago. 1/4 of the season is already in the books.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:26 PM ^
Better options? A 250lb converted fullback is our starting DT. What are you even talking about?
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:36 PM ^
Pardon the dumb question me but what happened to Paea and Vilian?
I was out of the country for a while and might have missed something

D line got punked on Saturday. It doesn't seem Smith and Hinton would be any worse. They must have a long way to go.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:50 PM ^
You must be new here.
In MGoBlog world DTs are only useful if they generate pass rush.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:09 PM ^
Also miss winovich, Gary and bush
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:18 PM ^
Exactly, as long as we're going there, Mo Hurst is missed too.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:10 PM ^
he is doing well for the Seahawks....
September 23rd, 2019 at 10:29 PM ^
He's no Slim Harpo.
September 23rd, 2019 at 11:59 PM ^
I miss having huge dudes playing NG and 3 tech.
September 24th, 2019 at 2:05 AM ^
I believe the team also misses a certain defensive line coach who defected to the buckeyes.......
September 24th, 2019 at 8:16 AM ^
Yep, I can agree. Who is this Shaun Nua?
September 24th, 2019 at 2:07 PM ^
That certain D line coach was very good, but his recruiting left us with a massive hole where we're supposed to have defensive tackles. Nua has almost nothing to work with on the interior.
September 24th, 2019 at 6:39 PM ^
He was at Michigan for 8 years. He got a lot of D linemen into the pros.
Aubrey Solomon was not recruited by him. He was mostly ineffective. and now is gone. Don Brown was his main recruiter. Are you blaming Don Brown for him being gone? Or that guy?
James Hudson was recruited by him. Hudson was moved off the defensive line, but not by him. Hudson weighs 297. Michigan could have used him this year. But he is gone because he was moved to offensive line.
Phillip Paea was recruited by him. He was moved to offensive line, but not by him. Paea weighs 304. But now maybe he's back at defensive line. I don't know.
You can't blame that 'certain d line coach'.

I find it hard to believe that 300-plus pound Smith & Hinton can't contribute. Add Jeter and that's 3 dudes in the middle that weigh over 300 and yet we continue to play a 270 pound converted FB. I love Mason, but c'mon.
September 24th, 2019 at 8:17 AM ^
They need size in the middle, and they need it right now.
September 24th, 2019 at 12:20 PM ^
Watching that first video just pisses me off because damn did the defense really dominate that day besides a couple of late plays they couldn't make. Shame their effort was wasted by the refs and Michigan's offense giving the Buckeyes points.
