Covid Year Eligibility Question
I know in week 3 it’s a strange time to ask this but having last year be a free year of eligibility opens up a lot of questions.
We have several players like Jeter, Steuber, Filiaga that are listed as graduate students but would be eligible to return next year if 2020 didn’t count.
Also have several key starters Hayes, Haskins, Green, Gray that are listed as seniors when they could actually be RS Sophomore eligibility due to redshirting and then 2020 not counting.
So my questions would be: Are we allowed to be over 85 scholarships or was that just for this year?
I assume it’s up to the coaches the same as inviting 5th year players back? I would love to have 2 more years of the guys listed above but I don’t know if that’s possible, so just trying to see if anyone knows the rules.

I really thought this was going to be a different point from how I read the thread tittle. Was about to make some popcorn.

You are definitely not the only one. There were a lot of different ways this post could've gone based on that title but I'd lying if I thought eligibility would be one of them.

Probably should have titled it Covid Year Eligibility Question, but you know..things like editing titles aren’t possible in 2021.

I'll go and edit that in as your new and improved thread title.

But now I'm left to wonder what the original title was...
Possible options:

.
Your guesses reflect very accurately what others were left wondering about when seeing "A Covid Year question" as the original title.

If we're honest, part of the allure of this site is the bad post--->shitshow that occurs once or twice a week. Bad OP titles are fun!

That is a true statement

TBH, I click on the probable-trainwreck thread titles way more often than the others. This community never disappoints with the responses.

My guess is:
- If you can go to the NFL, then go, but we'll take you back if you really don't want to
- If you aren't a starter, then here's a firm handshake
- If you're an in-betweener at a particular position of need, you're welcome back

Agreed, obvious answer is obvious.
I think there are a couple I can think of that might be playing elsewhere next year with that eligibility and getting passed. Which makes you wonder how many MAC or lower P5 teams might be pretty good next year with top tier castoffs with another year of practice.

I'm pretty sure that the scholarship limit of 85 returns in '22-'23. Yet I'm also pretty sure that any player who was on a roster last year has an extra year of eligibility. So, if I'm right, there is going to be a scholarship crunch next season.

Ronnie Bell will always have a spot for his 6th and 7th years.

Or we make those guys walk-ons and a kindly donor pays their scholarships for next year thank you very much NIL! Time to get funky with it and quit playing by the “rules” insofar as there are any anymore.

Haskins and Bell with two more years of eligibility and Hutchinson with one more. Let’s all just dream of that possibility (along with our Freshman RB Blake Corum)

my takeaway from this is that i am now completely reinforced in my core belief that 2020 did not will not and can never count
