College Bball tipoff marathon open thread
Right now it's Memphis vs. Wichita State in Sioux Falls, SD of all places on ESPN.

NIU vs SFA and Manhattan vs UMass were both awesome games earlier. I wish there were more marathons like this throughout the season.

And Kentucky vs Kansas should be amazing.

v. Duke seems like a semi-annual affair right now.
If it is November, you know its State v. #1 Ranked Team in the Nation time.

If I bet money on sports I would definitely put money against MSU tonight, no way they stay within 8 of Duke.

I would too. Okafor is going to have a field day with Costello. Schilling may have the athletic chops to hang with him, but Costello won't.
Speaking of Costello, I wonder how often he regrets spurning Beilein now that he's hit a skill development wall since being at MSU.

I'd put this at 20 points. Izzo hasn't done much coaching since 2010.

it is just because we are now good at basketball and bad(very) at football, but I like college basketball better. Actually, I don't think that is the reason, because this extends further than Michigan. I would watch a high level college basketball game before watching a high level college football game. I like it more. I was so happy when I turned on ESPN and saw that Minnesota was playing Louisville. I watched all of that god-awful basketball game and found myself completely fulfilled with what I was watching. I find myself antsy and kind of bored with college football right now, I usually watch about a quarter and then I am good.

I'm with you. Sadly, we are a rather small bunch on this blog. Seems like football posts for a game against Akron get more activity than a regular season basketball tilt with Arizona.

correlated with my first participation in fantasy football, and now i really can't stand watching college football unless it's michigan (and that i can barely tolerate for other reasons). but i can watch any college basketball game between decent opponents and enjoy it...whereas i don't really enjoy the nba unless it's a marquee matchup.

is kind of weird to me. I literally cannot watch a regular season game, even big time matchups. I will fall asleep(or change it to The Town or The Intership or something), but once the playoffs start I am all in. I am known to be up at 1:30 AM watching the end of a first round Nuggets-Warriors game on any given night. It is awful to me during the regular season and must see TV during the playoffs.

nba was my third favorite sport after 1) michigan football and 2) michigan football. i hated the nfl and hated nhl and hated baseball. shaq is my favorite sports player of all time, and i would watch the lakers whenever they were on tv. the comeback vs the kings was my favorite non-michigan sports moment of all time, and i will scream LALALALLAA really loudly whenever anyone wants to talk about a conspiracy against the kings.
but now, i just don't find anyone compelling to watch. players are in my opinion better now, but i'm just not into it. it's not necessarily rational, i just don't enjoy it.

was some really good Lakers stuff back then. The Kings series was great(even though Kobe Bryant actually committed an intentional foul up two with 7 seconds to go to have a chance at a game winner in a spectacular display of narcism), and the Blazers series was classic.
I may be a little older. From the Bad Boys prime years through the Bulls third title was the NBA hay day to me.

so in my childhood the pistons were grant hill and then poop and then in high school they were great. but by that time i was a lakers fan, so when they knocked off the lakers i was more than a little conflicted.

they had Otis Thorpe too. And don't forget Mateen Cleeves. There was some great stuff there.

Love both sports equally, but college hoops has been a little more enjoyable to watch for me lately because I am a UNC fan. (dont neg me too much)

procrastinate this day away.

I hesitate to throw matchup stats out there because the average of two games isn't going to be all that telling, but all the same, TeamRanking is going with Duke more or less here - 75.6% estimated probability of a win by their algorithm. Their predicted score, which I assume is still based on a model with mostly last season's data in it, is 76-68.

Can't believe it's that close. Biased hatred aside, after watching them play I thoroughly expect MSU to get walllopped.

I don't know if Izzo's already alluding to potential excuses in case Duke beats up on them (which is likely), but essentially admitting that his players aren't as talented as their opponent's seems kind of low.
Regardless, it should be interesting to see if/when he ends up falling back the injury narrative.

Man...this Utah/SDSU game is uuuggglllyy. It's the Big Ten Football version of Basketball.
33-24 SDSU with 8 minutes left. In the game.

After watching Duke-MSU and then Kentucky-KU last night, I woke up this morning and my first conscious thought was, "Jesus Christ, Kentucky is tall as shit."
