Club Hockey Team Advances to National Semis

Submitted by Darrens Pet Turtle on

The Club Hockey team won their bracket in San Jose and has moved on to the National Semi Finals.  The website is referring to them as the tourney's "Cinderella."  They play Sparty tonight at 8:00 pm.  3 of 4 semi finalists from the state of MI (GVSU).

Make it happen, fellas!

The third period of their second game was incredible.  They were down 2 and scored 3 goals within 2 minutes of each other to hold on to the win.

Does the club team serve as a sort of farm team for the varsity squad. I seem to remember there have been times when a player gets "called up" from club to varsity in time of injury or short scholarships.

For the most part, if a guy that played club is on Varisty, it is because he tried out and made the team.  Red and the staff are not scouting the club games.  The only real chance for club guys to show their stuff to the Varsity coaches is in the Blue and White game.  Every year a handful of club guys are chosen to fill roster spots.

There's enough healthy scratches on the varsity team to cover for those circumstances. It usually only happens during the GLI, when we lose a few guys to the WJC tournament on top of injuries/having a smaller-than-average roster/people kicked off team/etc.

This team is a Cinderella team in the true sense of the term.  They finished the season .500 and were the 9th seed at regionals.  (Teams ranked #1 and #2 in the Central region get byes to Nationals, while teams seeded #3-10 play in single-elimination regional tournament to determine the region's final 2 seeds for nationals.)  GVSU was #1 and MSU #2

They knocked off #4 Lindenwood 3-1 and #3 Depaul 5-1 at regionals to advance to natty's.  Since they were the lowest seed to advance to Nationals from the Central region, they were placed in a pool with #1 from the NE, #2 from the West and #3 from the Southeast were they went 2-0-1 in pool play.

They play Sparty tonight at 8pm.  They swept us this season 7-4 and 3-2 (at the Big House), but this team is playing their best hockey of the year right now.

Game is streaming live on www.fasthockey.com if you're not watching bball.  You need to register with the site to watch but it is free.

Go BLUE!
