Chase Winovich love at PFF
Mike Renner has been leading by the hype train for Chase Winovich leading into the draft and wrote the following article about Chase’s underrated production.
The following excerpt should turn a few heads.
“All Winovich did on the football field at Michigan was disrupt opposing offenses week after week. He earned a 92.3 overall grade over the last two seasons. Below is the full list of the Power 5 players who have earned a grade as good or better their last two seasons since we started grading:
Nick Bosa
Myles Garrett (tie)
Joey Bosa
That’s it.”
That's..... pretty good. Gonna miss him for sure.
Excellent player, great interview, and he dyed his hair and encouraged others to do so for an outstanding cause. What NFL team wouldn't want a future Walter Payton Man of the Year on the roster?
He's currently getting a second round grade by most. Wonder if someone will take a chance at the end of the 1st?
Id be all for him going late to the Pats !
Roger hasn't figured out a way to dock the 1st round pick yet. So, maybe. Wino would be more useful to the Pats if he could catch passes.
Could Ben Mason develop into a facsimile of this? Similar size, speed, makeup, motor.
I realize the cone drill is more relevant to D-linemen but does Mason actually have similar speed? Chase just ran a laser 4.59 while the only number I can find for Bench is 4.88. That might be a rough hand-timed number but it’s a pretty large gap.
I'm not sure about Mason but it sure would've been nice if Gary could've developed into a facsimile of this.
PFF does not give Gary much love compared to Winovich. They think he is not a 1st round talent.

"Gary’s best overall season grade is 80.4, coming last year on only 353 snaps and his peak pass-rush grade is only 72.7, earned in 2017 on 341 rushes. Historically, the best college pass-rushers have had pass-rush grades upwards of 85.0, and players with a grade of 87.0-plus have done a far better job of translating to the NFL.
Gary falls far below that standard, but like every number, it’s important to dig into the context.
Defensive scheme can certainly limit a player’s opportunities, so it’s fair to ask whether or not Gary was limited during his time at Michigan. While he has been used on stunts and as more of a “decoy” on blitzes, Gary has had plenty of one-on-one opportunities to rush the passer in his three years at Ann Arbor. When we filter out plays with no blitzes and no stunts, Gary ranks just 64th among edge defenders in the draft class with at least 100 opportunities and only 30th among those with at least 250 rushes.
His 68.8 pass-rush grade in such situations is just as concerning as his overall grading suggests, especially when his peers who are receiving similar first-round hype are all ranked among the top 15 in this situation. His own teammate, Chase Winovich, ranks 10th with a pass-rush grade of 84.5 in these instances, and Winovich outperforming Gary, both against the run and as a pass-rusher, has been a consistent theme during their time together at Michigan."

Very tough indictment.
Ben Mason doesn't have the quickness of Winovich to duplicate him. I think that's why he's at DT also.
Early day 2 pick. Will make some NFL team very happy. Guy will always be a fan favorite here. Loved his refreshing and brutally honest interviews.
Darn Bosa's...I feel like it's cheating since they are just clones of their dad.
What a waste of a draft pick their dad was for the Dolphins. He never did jack for Miami.
PFF mock draft has Chase going in the 1st round. 3 Michigan players go in the 1st round in their mock draft, but not 1 you're probably thinking. They're Bush at #20, Long at #25, Winovich at #31.

Am I going crazy...no Gary?

PFF views Gary as one of the biggest risks/potential busts if he's taken in the 1st round. None of Gary's numbers at PFF equal a 1st round talent.
What's really interesting is their grading system on D linemen has panned to to be essentially right. It has translated very well to the pros. Which is very bad for Rashan Gary.
He’s hoping for the Rams, or so he told me when I ran into him in California.
I’m hoping for New England so he can play with Brady.
Chase > Gary
He was more productive, less injury prone, and more of a team leader.
I can’t wish for anything much for him but the absolute best. Epitome of an M athlete.
