CFB on Detroit radio

Submitted by winterblue75 on

MSU Nike whatever uniforms come out today.

It's Notre Dame week for MSU.

So guess what a certain radio host (term used loosely) on a certain Detroit radio station have been talking about for a day and a half now?

Let him have his hay day. He is upset because he hates seeing Michigan get national attention and winning. He is doing this for scare tactics as well as divide the base. He knows what he is doing.

.....that guy that hosts the show with a certain Detriot News sports columnist?

I saw the uniforms - Oregon's copyright attorney on Line 2. South Florida is on line 4. That guy that keeps calling and saying George Perles never mixed metaphors is on Line 3.

on this site is good for them.  I am certain that's their view; they must love it.  Their product is "controversy" and if we add to that, it is good for them.

For that reason alone, I'd suggest that the MGoBlogerati just turn their backs on them.  Don't listen; don't call in; don't mention them here.  That's real easy for me to say, I know.  On rare occasions, I have been a listener.  On even rarer occasions, I have called in.  It is always regrettable.  Always.  Do as I say, not as I do.

For a long time, a lot of well-meaning and well-intentioned members of this Board have suggested that we not post any links to Freep.com, and that we not bring them up at all, under the presumption that any attention paid to them just helps them promote their product.  That hasn't been my view, obviously, although I cannot remember the last time I ever promoted anything in the paper or posted one of its links.

The basic difference that I've always seen bewteen the Detroit newspapers and the Detroit sports radio yappers, is that the newspaper is capable of some real malevolence, causing real harm to Michigan's football program.  Whereas the radio station never does anything but promote barroom arguments.  I've always thought that the Free Press, posing as a news source, was worth rebutting and that there was actually some importance in doing that, and some tangible benefit to Michigan when the paper and its reporters could be discredited.  To a great extent, I think it has worked.  The paper has been fully discredited on this blog, and an awful lot of the people who are semi-credible opinion-makers in college football get it; it is now common knowledge that Rosenberg and Snyder concocted a wildly inaccurate story, which was largely exposed as false and exagerated when the real investigation was completed.  It has helped a lot that David Brandon has been unafraid to take on the paper, and it has helped to keep up the steady drumbeat of Freep exposes.

Sportstalk radio never attempts anything like what Rosenberg did.  They don't do any "investigative" work.  They don't really take any positions, or try to change anything.  They just offer opinions, about everything.  Maximize the number of listeners, tuning in to all of the arguments and pumping the Arbitron numbers.  It is basically impossible to insult Mike Valenti, because the only rules he holds himself to are the rules of "entertainment."  And in entertainment, the only bad news is no one paying attention.

huh?

Are you saying that because the print media can harm Michigan then we should at least tolerate them?

I'm really trying to process this one but I think ultimately, if we don't call the Freep out for their bulloney, then we're endorsing it in a round about way.

I haven't clicked a Freep or si.com link (Rosenberg) since then.  I haven't watched Jim Rome (Sharp) since then.

Furthermore, it's been a long, long, time since the Freep has posed as a news source you say.  There's a reason why it was known as Fort Schmbecheler back in the day.  There's a reason why the Freep was persona non grata when Carr was around.  The Freep is a tabloid rag at best (but in all fairness, I get tired of detnews.com puff pieces as well).

Just like Dave Shand told Jim Carty, if the GM isn't getting complaints, you're not doing your job.

As far as Freep being discredited, doubtful and the term has no meaning anymore -- 2 of the 3 turds at the Freep have national forums.

Every once in a great while I happen to land on one of the Detroit sports blabber stations while I'm channel surfing in my car. I can take about 35 seconds and that's it. A daily diet of it makes you dumb and dumberer.

There was a time I thought he was bright and he was just acting this way for entertainment. However one day I tried to have a fair conversation over twitter. He called me an idiot, told me to learn the game and blocked me from his twitter. From that day forward I refuse to listen to their program. Zero class.

If Mr. Valenti follows this blog at all (and I imagine he does, at least occasionally), I guess I'd like to say to him, from one Spartan to another, that I think Hoke has changed the tide on the rivalry. Hell people in Ohio are starting to believe him. Never in a million years I would have thought that. Selling Michigan jerseys is a good start.

This is why I was so excited about the return of the podcast-I just can't listen to the sports talk anymore during drive time.

Yes, they are selling controversy, but since they have "open lines" one thing you have to realize is that the only people who make it to air are the kind of people who have a lot of time on their hands to wait on hold. Not exactly my kind of people...

those people who have all that time, seem to fall for the obvious troll bait the hardest. And there's no doubt that the calls are screened to let the dumbest or most irate Michigan fans on the air so they can represent the fanbase badly. It's Mike's entire gimmick. Set up topics to piss off Michigan fans.. then screen the calls to make sure you let the dumbest ones on the air. It's exactly how it works. When do you ever see him take time out of the show to set up topics like that for MSU fans? It never happens.. but he sets aside hours of his show every week, hell, hours each show sometimes.. to just set up topics to bait in stupid callers. Luckily, Mike gets his as much as he dishes it out.. unfortunately we don't usually get to see it really... but what I've seen a couple times, other media members hate the guy and he gets shit on in the "inner circles" and nobody really wants to associate themselves with him.. especially if he's ever invited out to cover or be out at detroit sporting event. Nobody respects what he is doing.. which is very simple. Maybe smart, because it does get ratings being an asshat, but its easy and not real.

I never call into the show.. I never will.. because that's his territory and he gets to run the show, set the scene, talk over you, and make everything be in his favor.. oh and cut you off whenever he wants.. its a very easy gig. but it was refreshing to have a chance to go back and forth with him on an even playing field when I got into it with him on Twitter one time and see that he was still a toolbag who can't talk about michigan/michigan state without being a complete green and white slappy. Actually, what's worse is he's a bigger Michigan hater than a Spartan fan. I really get a good kick out of how he brings up Michigan fans talking about State, but he literally revolves majority of his show around bashing Michigan.. they've beat us three years in a row now and he's still got a Michigan complex that will last a life time. We'll always be in his head. Hell, just listen to him on the radio or check his twitter... its 24/7 Michigan talk. The guy can't get enough of it.

Sparty talk about ND this week at all.  They are going to get trucked and they know it.  Notre Dame is a 2-0 football team with an 0-2 record.  Their schedule is very manageable after State and they could feasibly still have a very good season.  The MSU secondary is about as good as ours (though they would have you believe that they start Dion Sanders, Charles Woodson, and Ronnie Lott) and Floyd will continue to dominate.  Notre Dame's run defense is also very solid, taking away Sparty's strength.  This one will get away from State, last year Iowa style, book it.

I don't listen. If it's any other sports season but football I'll occasionally listen, but when it comes to Michigan it's kinda pathetic. The guy talks up MSU so much like they're an entire team of All-Americans and ignores everything. Ever since that stupid rant that got National Attention he's become this "Football Know-It-All" on the Airways. He acts like he is the smartest guy in the room about everything. And it's pretty obvious how much they screen their calls to slant against Michigan
