no.  wait.  83 3/4 games for 20 straight years.

or, over 40 games per year for 40 years.

absolutely amazing.

WOW! Congrats, Hutch! Congratch, Hutch!

I saw her once on the north side of the Stadium with few around, and I thought to go up and congratulate her, but then decided I wouldn't intrude. Still wish I had done it.

Michigan holds on for a 3-2 victory.  Storako struggled in the seventh and Beaubien came on with runners on first and second with no outs for the save.

She started as HC at UM when I was still a student and many people thought this was a partial or non-scholarship program. Congrats, Coach Hutchins!

IIRC she had to do steno work part time at the beginning because softball coach wasn’t a full time position.  She was also a large part of a lawsuit against MSU athletics in the name of gender equality.

All Hail Title IX and thank you Coach Hutchins!!!!

My cool story bro. Her brother was my insurance agent. Nicest guy in the world. He lives an hour from AA but would always find a reason to come out to my office so he could have lunch with his sister. I have a soft spot for siblings who remain close like that because I've personally seen some dark Cain & Abel shit in my life.

I was covering some of the non-revenue sports for The Ann Arbor News when she was hired, so I went to a lot of the games. This was way back when Title IX was still controversial and Michigan, unfortunately, was not very supportive. You look at the historical records in various women's sports, especially the team sports, and it wasn't very strong. The Big Ten and the NCAA started sponsoring softball in 1982.

But the softball team had some success. And Hutch came in, still in her 20s, and I don't think anyone ever told her she couldn't win here. She was building a process before she was even building a team, and people respected that. It was very much under the radar back in the '80s and early '90s - crowds were mostly parents and friends and the stands were limited to a pair of aluminum bleachers on either side of home plate. Half the home season were played (and still played, obviously) when it's a little too cold to be thinking about spending a couple of hours on aluminum bleachers.

Little by little, she kept improving the program, connecting to those early-season tournaments against the good west coast teams. And then the first of what's now more than 20 Big Ten titles.

So, 1,675 wins later (1,652 at Michigan - she had one season with Ferris State) and in her 38th season here... just amazing. By the end of the season, she'll likely pass Arizona's Mike Candria for the most wins with one program (Candria retired this past summer) and she'll hold that record for a long time.

A remarkable career here. We're lucky to have her around, and hopefully this team, behind its two excellent pitchers, has a shot at getting back to the CWS. Hutch has taken 12 of her teams to the World Series.
