I actually feel really bad for Ball State. I mean the last two weeks of the season you win @ undefeated in the MAC at that point, CMU (despite a good game from Dan LeFevour), then you blow out a WMU team @ home that had only two losses (@ Nebraska and @ CMU), and then they lay an egg against Buffalo in the MAC championship. Granted Buffalo is better then people give them credit for. Their record is only 7-5 but its freakin' Buffalo, and look at their losses.... 27-16 @ Pitt 42-21 @ Mizzou 27-25 @ CMU 34-28 OT WMU 24-21 Kent State They were a good team, losses to two BCS schools, and then at MAC power CMU, and home in OT to WMU. Ball State's toughest non-conference opponent was Indiana. Kudos to the Buffs for surviving a tough schedule and beating and exposing an overrated Ball State team by outplaying them on national TV. Somebody get Turner Gill a job at a BCS school.

they don't sign it. in fact you really don't have to sign an LOI, it's more or less a pageantry thing. you just have to enroll. what the LOI is is a legally binding agreement. to go to the school though you just have to enroll.

Upstate NY baby. That coach needs a better job. Surprised he's not being talked about more for these openings. Anyone who can make UB an even decent team gets a lot of respect from me. How many people want to go to school in a ghost town where it regularly snows 2 feet?

.....what some of the Nebraska fan base thinks of this.....not only was Gill an awesome player there, but he was very successful there as an assistant for well over a decade.....but, his DC is also a former NU player and assistant. So, he'll do the same at Syracuse. In three years, they'll be the Big East BCS team.....and after another 7-5 season in Lincoln with Missouri and KU still ahead of them in the division, they will let Pellini go and pluck Gill back home. I thought they should have hired him last year.

They seem to like Pelini quite a bit. They're pretty aware that the defense was not recruited for very well under Callahan, not nearly to the extent he went after offensive skill players, but they did see real improvement in the defense in a conference full of ridiculous offenses (Nebraska finished in the top 20 nationally in offense, which got them 6th in the conference -- square in the middle of the conference pack). And you also have to consider that a majority Nebraska fans wanted Pelini hired instead of Callahan in the first place. Pelini was also smart enough to keep the OC under Callahan -- offense was not the problem last year, making the Pelini hire make even more sense, they brought in a defensive guy, one with past success running the defense at Nebraska, to get more focus on the problem. Obviously, the question will be how his recruiting is, but that would have been a question under Gill too.

was the school's top recruiter during its heyday in the mid to late 1990s/early portion of this decade. I would have no questions about his ability to recruit at Nebraska. But, you are right about Pellini. Half the fan base wanted him after the Solich departure. Considering his stock was still high--if not higher, given what he did at LSU and Okalahom since his stint as DC at Neb--it was hard to fight the public tide in hiring him. We'll see how it plays out, but right now Turner Gill is the more accomplished head coach of the two and had a decade long plus run of success on the Neb sidelines as a top assistant.

......only one winning season.....at Buffalo.....a total waste land of college football and at the end of Year 3, he has them winning the conference. They had five league wins in five years before hiring him.....he's had back to back 5-3 league seasons. Pellini only has one winning season as well and he sure as heck had a deeper talent well to start with than Gill did. Sure, Pellini has them in a Jan 1 bowl game, but what does that mean? They might be the sixth best team in the league, at best. Plus, their careers as an assistant are a wash......Those three national titles and additional national title game appearance from 1994 to 2001 were done with Gill as the top assistant and recruiter. The dude can coach my team any day of the week.

Warde Manual, who was Bill Martin's right hand man while at Michigan, has to be loving life as the Buffalo AD right now. He made a great hire by bringing in Turner Gill, and there is no reason that this could not be a good team for a while. Buffalo is a great football town, and if both coach and AD stay this could be a good situation.

Turner Gill has turned a lot of heads here in WNY. the team is becoming very popular in the Buffalo Area. Rumor around here is that he and his family really like this area. When i student taught, i was actually at the school his daughter was at, man is she a good athlete too. Dont know if he has any other kids, but i know she absolutely loved being here, dont know how much that will have an affect on moving to a new spot in the future. hopefully UB can get a 8 million dollar buyout clause or something so they can make money off him leaving if he does
